OK, macgeek, first of all... CHILL! There's no need for the language, we're discussing SW here! Not world peace or a cure for AIDS... take it easy, let's keep this a friendly discussion with different opinions...
Second, I agree with you, ROTS will be full of emotions, and I do hope you'll prove me wrong next month...
However I also know what happened in 1999 and 2002 and call me sceptic, but while I believe ROTS will surpass those films anyway, I don't think it will necessecarily surpass the OT.
When I watched the trailers for AOTC and saw part of the love scenes ("we could keep it a secret" "we'd be living a lie..."😉 I thought they'd be good, we all know how they turned out to be... I felt no emotional connection to it whatsoever.
When I watch the ROTS trailers ("You were the CHOSEN one!" "Anakin, you're breaking my heart!"😉 it looks great, but it's still no garantee (for me) from those clips that the movie will actually be thàt great.
I just think Lucas lost his "raw" edge... too many yes-men around him (McCallum), too centered on technology, not character... however seeing he has hired that actor/dialogue coach for ROTS (seen in the webdocs) is a sign in the right direction. I hope SW goes out with a bang, and while I believe ROTS will be one of the best SW flicks, I doubt it will surpass ESB.
We'll see...
And what about anakin trying to save padme from his vision of her dying in childbirth, and in his atemt to save her, kills her himself.
And what about anakin waking up as Darth Vader, and destroying the medical center he's in, when he hears that he killed padme.
"You were the chosen one. It was said that you would bring balance back to the force. You were meant to destroy the sith, not join them"
That "You were the chosen one" line, is being said as anakin is sliding down a bank of black sand, toward the lava pool. Then his rope catches on fire, and shortly afterward, he bursts into flames. then he yells "I HATE YOU!!!!". "You were my brother anakin, I loved you".
You call this not emotional?
The OT is a kind of twisted story about a group of heros fighting against an empire.
The PT is a story of the fall of The Republic that has stood for a thousand years.
There is so much more interesting action, cool characters (Obi-Wan, Mace Windu etc). I like Obi-Wan much more than Han Solo. Han solo doesn't really fit with the PT.
When I see the celebration scene at the end of ROTJ, It just doesn't mean anything to me, when I see lando, and han laugh and hug each other, cause they have nothing behind them. No tragedy, no brilliant past.
Now when you see luke and leia hug, that's something different. But Han Solo doesn't fit at all. He's this grumpy show off, that just pisses me off.
Think about the plot of Attack of the Clones, compared with any of the OT.
The Clone wars start. Think about how Darth Sidious is controling everything. He got the droid armies together, he got the clone army to come and rescue them. He does everything. It's all under his control, that's what's so cool about it. It's so much more complex, action filled, and interesting. There are actual plot lines that are hard to follow. And mysteries, that aren't explained with the shot of Han Solo's pistol. Like the scene when Obi-Wan arrives on Kamino. That's one of the greatest scenes in all of Star Wars.
And if you were wondering what I thought about all the love scenes in AOTC, this is what I think.
Every single second of Love scenes adds tragedy to that one moment in Episode III, when anakin chokes her. If there was half as much of it, that Tragedy in Episode III wouldn't be nearly as deep.
I never really got good at explaining why the PT is superior to the OT, because I never thought anyone would be stupid enough to think that that group of nut cases running around all over the place in the OT, can compare to the complex plots, and cool characters in the PT.
