SVP's story is actually very original. You claim to know about wars in general, correct, yet you say that a story about a platoon that is assigned to find one man is stupid?
You do know that it is standard G.I. tact to honorably discharge any enlisted Armed Forces member, should any member of their family be enlisted and reported as M.I.A., P.O.W., or K.I.A./K.I.C.?
How is this a "dumb story". It's original, it's played out masterfully, well cast, and it's without a doubt one of the most REALISTIC war movies ever made. Realism being the driving point here.
While I will respect the fact that you didn't enjoy the movie, I don't respect your reasoning, which to most of us, seems quite empty as a matter of fact.

Platoon is actually more accurate and more truthful in it's showing of the war portrayed in the film. I think saving private ryan is vastly over rated, the only truley strong part of that film is the opening D-Day scene, everything else is basically mediocre and even bad (the storyline is too unbelievable for my tastes).
Plus, it glorifies the war it portrays, it makes it seem exciting and almost fun. I remember alot of my friends having a discussion a few years ago about what character they thing would be the most fun to live as and what not. Shows how the movie failed in portraying the war in a tragic light, which is how war should be portrayed, and only a couple of films has achieved this...SPR was not one of them.

Im sorry BackFire but I disagree with you. Saving private Ryan is not overrated. Spielbierg shot the film very good. He studied war documentaries of war for the movie shots. Like the battle in Omaha beach seem very well done. it gave the audience the feeling of being in battle front. Very similar to Black Hawk down with the moving of the camera.
I like Saving private Ryan because even though the storyline seems silly. You have to remenber that Ryan is the LAST of the brothers to survive. Im not sure but I think the military doesn not allowed surviving familily members to continue on battle. Since the other two die and Ryan is the last surviving member he has to live in order to continue his family blood line to continue. It sounds weird, but I felt for the storyline.
Besides I love Tom Hanks! He is just a great actor!
As I said, the first scene is outstanding, but the rest of the film is nothing special or new. It just failed to show the war in a tragic light, and ended up making it seem exciting. Also, Black Hawk Down is a terrible, repetitive, and boring film.
The storyline is indeed silly, and pretty much nonsense. Even if there was a situation like the one portrayed in the film, they would not risk the lives of 6 men to save one, it just wouldn't happen. They just used it as a cheesy way to portray "brotherhood" and "comradery". It was too unbelieveable and took alot away from the film in my eyes.
Like I said, SPR is a mediocre war film, it had good production values, good acting, and good directing with one scene that carried the whole film. There are better war films though.
I like Black Hawk Down, SVP, Platoon, Pearl Harbor, and We Were Soldiers all the same.
Windtalkers was garbage, and that said, I don't think there has been a better film in the past 2 decades than SVP.
You want real war movies, you have to go back a few decades. Sands of Iwo Jima, Patton, Tora!Tora!Tora!, Bridge over the River Kwai, Casablanca, Paths of Glory, Where Eagles Dare, etc.

The story is lame. The opening scene is awesome, its probably 1 of the best opening scenes ever, but the story is lame and the movie is way to long.
Oh and has for war movies it is rare the portuguese movie that is not about or involves in same way the colonial wars. Do you know what that is??

It already went down in history for being the most accurate portrayal of the Vietnam war, every veteran you talk too will recognize this film as the most realisitic, probably because the director (oliver stone) was actually there, and experienced everything that happened in the movie.
It shows how war can turn a man into a beat like no other film has ever been able too.
