As a form of anamistic worship, it was a legit religion in its time and place. I don't understand why modern Americans have revived it with such enthusiasm. It would be like if people were worshipping the Greek and Roman gods. Or if Mexicans such as myself started worshipping the Aztec gods and ripped beating hearts out peoples' chests.
*Voo Doo, Santeria, and Shinto are also forms of anamism; however unlike Wica, they weren't dead religions that were revived by modern people. They had been continuing and were passed down in an unbroken chain.
Most people don' t distinguish between something that exists today, and its historical roots. Wicca was originally founded by Gerald Gardner most likely in the 1940s, first openly revealed in 1954.
Many believe he invented it himself, and feel that his writings were more his own creations than true (and ancient) practices that had been handed down through generations.
Even though there may be ideas, concepts, practices, or beliefs in the Wicca we know today that are based in older knowledge, the collected whole as presented by Gardner only came into existence in the 1950s and is a young, new religion.
Wiccan is pagan and is an earth or nature religion, one that sees the divine manifest in all creation. The cycles of nature are their holy days, the earth is their temple, its plants and creatures their partners and teachers. They worship a deity that is both male and female, a mother Goddess and father God, who together created all that is, was, or will be. The attributes of what is even mentioned in scripture with "El" (with an accompanying verb change makes it male or female, otherwise it's neutral)) in respect life, cherish the free will of sentient beings, and accept the sacredness of all creation. Celtic society had gradually spread across Northern Europe into what is now England, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland etc. They never formed a single political entity, but remained as many tribes who shared a common culture Much of it came from the ancient Celts and Druids and with the persecutions by the Roman, Norman, Saxon invasion along with Christian germicides they had gone underground. Many would confuse them with the worship of many dieties, though I've read its just the Mother Goddess Earth and the Father of light or Sun.

If I wore my Pentacle were people could see it ID GET SHOT what kind of world are we living in I found a website showing modern day BAPTISTs burning innocent Wiccans Id like to see what the gods decided would come back to haunt them!!!
I am Wiccan as well and I have a silver ring with a pentacle on it and on several occassions people come up to me and say things like "OMG do you worship the devil?" And stupid things like that. I am sick of it but unfortunately there isn't much we can do about it. There are always going to be narrowminded pricks who are disrespectful and won't be open to the idea of this religion. Bigotry will always be around and it really sucks. 😬
