Hmm violence is the same and even escalating and this obioulsily not an accident. The election is coming and I wonder can the elction even take place! I doubt it and JAn,31 is not going to be a good day in Iraq. If you have not heard the army thinks a civil war is coming in Iraq, so they are trying to hold elections so they can leave. The questions i ask are........
IS DEMOCRACY POSSBILE IN IRAQ and WAS THIS WAR WORTH IT??

hmmm...depends on what your definition of democracy is

-if you mean a government for the people and by the people...no
-if you mean the forced occupation of a sovereign state, indefinite martial law, and installation of a puppet government through a farce of an election...yes

wow 36 people that like one thousanth smaller that any war battle ever documented

it was never intended to make them a democracy in the first place.
they just burnt their asses right now and are trying to leave as fast as they can

Democracy just like any other political system takes time build. Truth is we don't know when will this conflict end. This might take years and who knows how many lives will be lost. All we can do is wait and see what develops.

On a side note I think is better if we just make one whole War on Iraq thread. Most of this arguments become redudant at times. Just better to recycle them all in one place.

That's a pretty harsh quote from some one who is supposed to be in the military. Way to trivialize the death of your fellow soldiers.

Iraq will never be a democracy. If eventually someone can come back to this post and say, "you were wrong", than great. But I don't see it ever happening.

A democratic government has to be attained by a population, not thrust upon them.

BINGO

Of course it's possible. Difficult, but possible. And now that we've torn their country to bits and occupied the people, why not try to establish a democracy? Of course it isn't going to be easy but it's better than going in there and dismantling their country and then leaving them high and dry. Is this war worth it? Well I don't think so, but now that we're in it we might as well get the job done.

Why what? Why do I belive the war was worth it? Becuase I feel that the people or Iraq should be able to vote for there president and have a democracy instead of a dictator who gasses his citizens.. I guess you feel they dont deserve that right but hey thats you.

It's not so much that I don't feel they deserve a better government.. more that I don't feel it was our responsibility to give them one. Sorry if it sounds harsh but that's honestly how I feel. But, you shouldn't start to help them by getting rid of their leader and then ditch them. I feel we are now obligated to help them.

Why do you think we are setting up an election?

Team America (and its bitches): World (Oil) Police

Regardless of what came out of it, the war was not worth it.

Look at what's happened. Achieving the end product isn't anything to cheer about now. It took too many mess ups and mistakes before it came to be.

I didn't say we aren't trying to help them set up a democracy. I'm saying that I wish we hadn't started the war in the first place, but now that we have there's no turning back and I just hope we can finish the job.

finish the job my arse
not in our lifetime

The thing is, it looks like the people of Iraq don't want the americans to be there or else they would join in fighting the insurgents.

Easier said than done... maybe they don't fight the insurgents because they don't want to have their families murdered.

After so much war and violence for so long I don't think they are so much afraid of the insurgents as much as they just don't think that it will make a difference.

It also might have more to do with the tribal mentality that all the experts warned about at the beginnng of the war. No matter how much the separate tribes or factions hate eachother, the one thing that can unite them is the thought of outsiders in their land.
