i think every member of the JLA looks to superman as the leader figure, and i'm sure alot f the public do as well, however, Batman would be the most VITAL to the team, as he does support them finanically and has the brains to strategise stuff....

There was a stretch, around the JLI era, where Superman wasn't on the time. Batman left the team in a snit to form the Outsiders, and things went on. None of the members are indespensible.

Anyway; Martian Manhunter has Superman-like powers, and he's a detective, so that should make him most versatile.

martian manhunter seems to be something like the spiritual leader of the group and thus very important, but Batman might be the most important too. Its one of those two.

I believe Batman because he knows everyone weakness and often make up their counter attacks...that should make him very necessary..more so than even Kal-el

maybe, though when everything goes pear shaped i'd rather have superman than batman...

seems to me the team struggles more when it's Batmanless than when it's Supermanless.

when superman died they had to bring in a whole team to replace him...

I believe they are both extremely important..but the JLA could function without them...but those two are the key members...if memory serves neither one of them were orginal members of the JLA.

Martian Manhunter has always been the on most committed to the League, he was a founding member, and they've never really had to get along without him. His telepathy gives him a link to pretty much every member, and his powers are on par with the likes of Superman. Yes Bats and Supes are important in their own right, but MM is like the embodiement of the JLA itself. People are going to look up to Bats and Supes no matter what team they're on, but J'onn is and always has been about the League.
