He was the 1st, but many overrate him merely because of that. Being an icon is great, but that doesn't nullify the ridiculousness of the character. Name 1 mainstream character who's not more interesting.

Superman is THE definitive icon for truth, justice, and the American way in comics. He is the ultimate boy scout, and a shining ray of light and hope in an otherwise grim world of evil-doers. Yes, I will admit that he's not as cool as, say, Batman or Wolverine, but The Man of Steel is and always will be the original bad-ass and champion of good.

Superman is an icon. definatly. But he is only the "first original superhero" in the sense that he was the first amalgamation of ancient heros/superheroes. Like the original Gladiator, Heracles and Samsom.

Any who already read the original Gladiator novel will know where the whole orfan_with_scientific_parents_who_manipulated_his_genes came from.

He deserves respect yes and he is worlwide know among others but lets not exageratte and start going with " he was the first and everything else is crapolla"

Which is why he isn't he wins too much, down to earth characters do better, ( i.e batman or spiderman).

Wipping the floor with every single hero is a joke. What about Glads? Or the Hulk. Or hercules in a close combat match. Or Thor for all powers avaiable. Or Current She Hulk. Heck even Wonder Woman in an also close combat one.

Superman is one of the top super heros out there. You need a hero like him just like you need Captain American in Marvel. Superman can help everyone because he must. And he is like that because he grow up in Kansas, Smallvile

Superman kicks ass and all, but not on that level. He isn't unbeatable.
