Something tells me most people in this thread that are saying "Superman Sux" are actually teenagers. Why?
Well, when i was a kid i absolutely loved Superman. i mean, i worshipped the guy. Flying....who wouldn't love to fly...who hasn't had flying dreams? Superstrength....i mean...nough said 🙂 As for the rest of the powers...well, it's enough to make any kid drool. Then i grew into the angsty goth/i hate life teenager that was into Batman, Spiderman, and Spawn. But i'm older, more mature now.
I don't find inner demons so interesting anymore, traumatizing experiences that enteraining, etc. etc. In an imperfect world, Spiderman is a scrawny little kid that to me looks like a 5 year old given control over nuclear missiles....so...a mistake.
Batman looks like a guy that just can't get over an early experience and that most likely is afraid of counselling because it might just cure him and then what would he do right?
Superman is up there with the best. He represents hardness. A guy that won't give up no matter what. He has ideals and principles and you;re blaming him for that. He's fighting the good fight, protecting the innocent and even those that aren't innocent. For Christ's sake, this isn't even his planet...

My sentiments exactly

It's doesn't apply to many of us Supes haters/dislikers out there. It's not his morals that we dislike, it's everything else🙂. Disguise(glasses), costume(One of the worst ever), and powers(too damn many @ too high a level). There are more that I've listed in my other posts. He may not be the worst character ever, but he's far from the best. I don't get that

part either. Seems more like "If I put Spidey(and Batman) down, that'll make Supes look better". It hasn't 🙂

IMO those reasons are pretty subjective and petty.

🙁I disagree, but I'll defend to the death your right to voice your opinion.🙂

i hate went people say Supes has too many powers, his many powers are what make him super and a great superhero...he has everything that every human wants to live up to...super strength, super speed, super hearing, super sight/x-ray vision...he's the perfect superhero and the stronger he is the stronger his enemies are and the grander and more epic the battles become...just makes for amazing comics

Not really. Many powers don't make you a great Superhero. Batman has no powers and he's one of the best and most interesting.

Yeah he has every weapon on earth to use, that does everything superman could do. I consider that power. He has a robot for super strength, his laser for laser eyes, you know the rest.

I think the fact that superman has all those powers is what makes him such an intriguing hero...he stands for "truth, justice, and the american way" and by having all those powers it shows that "truth and justice" are powerful terms and cannot be defeated...superman is a definete, something that unites all people...and his powers elevate him to godlike status...no other superhero can claim that throne...and plus his powers are kickass

...on the other hand i've always found batman relatively boring...yeah he's a great detective and has cool gadgets but there are hundreds of characters our there who are great detectives and have cool gadgets...iron man is cooler character than batman because at least his gadgets can do some unheard of things

i think superman captures the whole magic of comics perfectly...batman is something relatively feasablie in real life and so it's not as amazing, while superman is something that we know could never exist so it makes him that much more amazing...

my 2 cents

my 2 cents...and some change

He really isn't the worst. The worst Superhero has already been cancelled, and do not appear in comics.

The fact that Superman has so many unrelated powers makes him less interesting. I'm not of the opinion that the more powerful or perfect a character is the more interesting, actually quite the inverse.

Edited repost:
As a cultural icon Superman is unsurpassed, and he isn’t the worst character ever, (there are tonnes of crappier characters.) but disregarding any bad writing a character may suffer and purely in terms of core character he’s mediocre at best. His appeal is understandable in that he is the uber-hero. He’s the cookie-cutter archetypal hero, a product of the Depression that people could look up to when there was nothing around to look up to. He’s good and decent and kind etc. Everybody in Metropolis loves him (except the criminals of course). Translate that to a modern era he’s a bit outdated and he’s just a bit bland. He was created in a post-world war black-and white world, and thus doesn’t translate that well nowadays amongst the shades of grey.

This is also why Superman appeals more to a younger audience, its more simple. Superman is good. His villains are bad. When the younger read comics there's also less of a need for relatability or relevance. They simply want someone to look up to. He's also revered due to a sense of nostalgia by the older comic readers.

It’s also been argued that he has no definitive personality and I for the most part have to agree. For a lot of characters it would be difficult to say they have no distinctive personality, (Batman, Spider-Man, F4, and most of the X-Men particularly the second genesis ones are characterised pretty well). That’s not to say he has to brood all day and night in a cave or have berserker rages to have a personality. Imo characters with intrinsic flaws and frailties are infinitely more interesting than those that are simply weakened by glowing green rocks. In the end he’s just too perfect to be really interesting. These days people look more to characters they can relate to in film, TV, books then characters they can merely look up to. How can one relate to someone whose practically perfect?

There’s nothing wrong with morals, nobility, regard for human life etc. However a character can have those traits and still be interesting and involving. The problem with Superman stems from the fact that those are his only personality traits – I think it’s been mentioned in this thread as his “vanilla personality”. Flaws make nobility seem all the more greater. Wolverine (just as an example) is a dichotomy wherein he has so many flaws, he’s surly, he’s a loner, he’ll kill and yet at his core he has a noble soul.

The costume, the disguise, the mishmash of powers and the plot device weaknesses. There are a lot of flaws in the design of Superman as a character (but he was one of the earliest so the creators didn’t have much to go off). The glasses as his only costume (even if he can’t be photographed according to some [Smallville High Grad Ceremony: Sign my yearbook? Sure which one’s you. Oh I’m the blurry one. Lol]) can only lead me to believe that all of Metropolis is myopic and tone-death (and Lois is supposed to be an investigative journalist?). In terms of powers, it’s not so much that he has too many, it’s that he has so many random powers mishmashed together with no logical link. There are heroes with many multiple powers that link in some way and make them more realistic. Everything inexplicable in Superman is simply attributed to him being from Krypton which I suppose is fair enough considering everything inexplicable in X-Men is because they’re mutants and everything in say Thor is because he’s an Asgardian god.

The reason that Smallville appeals to those that Superman the comic may not is that it is a more (old-school) Marvel approach to Superman. In the show Clark’s full of flaws that have nothing to do with Kryptonite. He's made much more easy to relate to for most people.

Also I'd note the Supreme Power take on Superman premise i.e. Hyperion is far more interesting.

^--all great points but i think the new generation of comic readers and superhero fans demand characters with more "realistic personalities" but the point of superman isn't to be realistic, it's to be that thing that people can look up to...everyone needs that guiding force...their moral compass, something that's unwavering and superman is a solid rock. That's why i said in my previous post that he has taken on a godlike status and rightfully so.
All the other characters may be more realistic but i don't read comics or watch movies about these characters because i wanna see something realistic, i read comics and watch movies for something that is supposed to be based in reality but is extraordinary. I don' wanna relate to superman, i wanna look up to him.
Superheros that i can relate to are great superheros as well such as Spiderman and the hulk but they aren't superman, no other character can actually ever be as great/godlike as superman because of the very nature of what superman is and represents. Perfection. And to me we need a little bit of perfection to look up to. 🙂
