How Civilised Were the Romans?
Introduction
In this essay I will answer the question stated above: How civilised were the Romans? I will cover topics such as architecture, organisation, technology and health.
Technology
The most well known object of Roman technology is the aqueduct. This advanced architecture was the source of clean water. The aqueduct was held up with arches, each one relying on one the Key Stone. It was curved, so the pressure went around and down. It was only slightly slanted, so the water did not run too fast or too slow. The was incredibly advanced as well as very civilised.
The Romans also had education, but unless the parents of the children were rich, they would not be educated or be taught the basics by their parents. The children started to be educated at seven years old, and the girls finished at the age of twelve, the boys at fourteen.
Roman literature also civilised. They had many writers, therefore many books.
One thing that was unbelievably uncivilised was slavery. They were picked up at the market for barely any money. Once bought, a slave stayed with the family that bought him/her for the rest of his/her life.
They got up as soon as the sun started to rise, warming the house and tidying around, until the head of the house woke up. Then s/he would help to dress him. When the day properly began, a group of slaves did jobs like walking the children to school, cook the food, clean the house, wash the clothes and do everything for their "family".
The slaves built the aqueducts, taught the children, and sold the books.
A lot were sacrificed in the games or brutally murdered.
Another uncivilised thing was the Class System. The emperors were at the very top, then the fighters, then the rich men, then the rich women and children, then the poor men, then the poor women and children, and lastly, the slaves. Men were allowed to do many more things than women, such as work. Women were expected to look after the house, although if they had slaves, it would be hardly anything.
Roman architecture was detailed and well-built. The temples for the gods were magnificent, as it was a place of worship.
The Romans invented the sewers. They knew that germs were the reason for diseases, and did not throw bodily waste out of the windows like everyone else at their time. They also had toilets, which was civilised. The pipes were slightly curved at the edges, so the waste would flow easily.
The Romans also invented roads. They knew that they had to have something other than rock to ride their horses and walk on, so they build roads. They were generally straight.
Another thing the Romans invented was medicine. It was not as advanced as today, but they knew about deseases and germs and that they had treatments.
A lot of the Roman Technology was taken from the Greeks, but improved greatly.
Organisation And Government
The Romans traded a lot of material, food and slaves for things that they did not have in Italy. They got things from all over the Empire,.
The Romans had law and punishments. The law was unfair as we see it, but for the Romans it was perfectly fair.
The Roman Army was highly efficient and obedient. It was arranged in large numbers with skilled gernerals.
Communication
The Romans invented the postal system, so as not to travel for hours on end, carrying a letter.
They were very sociable, and often had large families.
Health And Hygene
The Romans knew that uncleanliness lead to illnesses. They had baths, toilets and sewers. They had clean running water, thanks to the aqueducts.
Entertainment
The Romans had theatre, with as few actors as two. They wore masks to show the face expressions, as the highest seats were very far back.
The Games were uncivilised, as slaves were sacrificed to entertain the rich. They were performed in the Colloseum, which was enormous.
Chariot racing also used slaves, and it had no rules. Many people were brutally murdered to entertain.
Tolerence
The Romans accepted people with many gods, but not with only one. If they had one god, they could not worship the emporor, therefore were seen as improper Roman citezens.
Family Life
The average Roman family consisted of father, mother, children,married sons, their family, and slaves. If you didn't get married by the age of 15-16, you were punished. The person who decided who his children could marry was the head of the house; the father. The family was very important to the Romans. Women were under control of their husbands but controlled how the house was run.
If a woman gave birth to a weak or female child, it was left out at night to die. Weak children were no use to the Romans.
Conclusion
The Romans, by our accounts, were civilised, but with many exeptions. They were just over the average mark. On one hand, they were incredibly civilised because of the way they made things, and they were ingenius with their plans and knowledge. On the other, they left children to die and suffer, and were brutal to slaves.
By their accounts, they were the most civilised people the world had seen. Yes, they left the children to die, yes, they were brutal to slaves, but it became daily life and it was al perfectly normal. They thought they were civilised with no exceptions.
All in all, the Romans would have been just above average for some people, just below for some, right at the bottom or right at the top for others, if they were around in the 21st Century. But, in 1st - 2nd Century AD, they were perfectly civilised.
