New Pope Elected

This is great news for me. Just another indication of how the Catholic church is continuing to pathetically die off into a minute existence.

The church needed someone to bring its liberal and conservative members together. Someone who would've reached out to women whose stance on contraception was not as conservative as JPII. They elected someone as conservative if not more so than the last pope.

The church is dying in the developed world. The election of Benedict XVI will only cause it to do more so.

There's already negative mumbles here in America and Western Europe.

I personally dont like him. He was campaigning for the position and is clearly power hungry.

I agree. Benedict doesn't seem like a very nice guy: On Monday, Ratzinger, who was the powerful dean of the College of Cardinals, used his homily at the Mass dedicated to electing the next pope to warn the faithful about tendencies that he considered dangers to the faith: sects, ideologies like Marxism, liberalism, atheism, agnosticism and relativism — the ideology that there are no absolute truths.

“Having a clear faith, based on the creed of the church, is often labeled today as a fundamentalism,” he said, speaking in Italian. “We are moving towards a dictatorship of relativism, which does not recognize anything as definitive and has as its highest value one’s own ego and one’s own desires.”

I was hoping that he would pick a more hip & trendy name like,

It's amazing to me. Fox News has absolutely no shame. I don't know what's worse; Fox News for being so overtly biased, or the people who watch it for not realizing it. It was the first news channel that I reached on the dial. (Can you use the term dial anymore?) When I go tto it, I stopped because I just wanted to see what was going on in St. Peter's Square. Now, this Pope hasn't said much yet, but Fox plasters a quote of his all over the world, moments after he's been elected. Ratzinger: "Homosexuality is an indicitive moral evil." What the hell! I mean, it's obvious that there is some forthought going into this display. They've(The Fox News Propaganda Ministry) taken the four or five most likely winners of the conclaive and pulled apart theri writings in the past and chosen to plaster the ones that agree with the conservative christian right's agenda. Not only that, but they're using the headline: Habemus Papam. Which means "We have a Pope". There is no "we", unless you're catholic. Then, they put so much emphasis on the election process; treating it like it is a political election here in the states. The catholic church doesn't place so much emphasis on the election because they want people to focus on the "divine" aspect of the placement of the new Pope. Conservative talk news undermines their own agenda by doing so, and they're too stupid to figure it out. If god was influencing the minds of the cardinals, then it's wouldn't have taken four or five ballots to get a descision. The more they report on the real world aspect of this process, the less plausible it is to apply the "will of god" to any of it.

As for the new Pope, it hardly matters who is elected. There's only so much room for the interpretation of the bible. Also, cheers to teh church for utilizing the death of a Pope to convert and place themselves at the forfront of the christian world again. It won't last too long.

I don't know that he was campaigning for the position...you can't do that when it's the will of god, right? But, I agree. When he walked out on the balcony, he was claspping his hands in the international symbol of self-congratulation.

Quite sad they choose him, I mean it could have been less orthodox (as far as it possible among those 115 guys) Well let´s wait a few years then, it´s weird they choose such an old one for anything.

I know him as personally as he personally knows god.

Reading more into Benedict it seems that the last pope from a German-speaking land was Victor II, bishop of Eichstatt, who reigned from 1055-57. That's a long time. And it seems the new pope is a hardcore Theologian. Which is very beneficial for scholars who studied the Christian holy books.

Personally, I think thats what the Vatican wanted. A pope that is driven by the study of scripture rather than a Pope who is more "Liberal" (using the term losely) in social and political issues.

Let's be clear: There is no such thing as a liberal Pope.

And what's more is that they're talking about all the fuss of a German Pope being elected. How human. The Italians wanted an Italian Pope, the Africans wanted an African, the Americans have a confused look on their face and the Germans are all smiling.

What a petty argument to have, in the face of the "word of god".

It is the truth, though...this guy is 78 years old. JPII was 84. Benedict IS already towards the end of his lifespan.
