Official Doctor Who Thread

Well the age of the Doc is not really a problem; we've had one middle aged and two young ones since it returned, which is not drastically different from before- and Moffat was in fact casting for an older Doctor but got captivated by Matt Smith.

But having such similar companion dynamics really does wear thin on me. They don't seem to be changing it up at all- if they are going to keep on having them as contemporary Earth companions, they need to mix that up.

To be fair on RTD, Martha was an educated middle-class type where Rose was working class (though one gets the feeling some writers just gave her the same dialogue Rose would have got), and subsequently Donna was indeed very different from pretty much any Who companion there had ever been. The dynamic there changed constantly, even within the contemporary setting.

We'll see what this new girl is like but... hmm, I am suspicious.

I've currently become enamored with Frobisher, the shape-shifting guy who travels as a penguin, from the old DW comics. I really don't know enough about the old show to know if he was a TV companion or not, but it's a riot to see a talking penguin travel with the Doctor (who prefers to stay as a penguin most times for "personal reasons"😉.

I would legitimately like to see more of stuff like that. Just amp up the crazy.

But non-humans are a tough sell, and non-females are a tough sell. So I'm resigned and just enjoy it for the most part. But I see your point.

Haha, no, Frobisher was in DWM only.

then after an episode you don;t like or even a run you don;t like there's always a strong chance of another golden one just around the corner.

In theory.

I admit to having been pretty put off by the last season (the one before that didn't stand out as being great, but was at least good, where this one was just...no), to the extent where I'm iffy about if I'm going to keep up with the show much longer if it doesn't get drastically better again.

Moffatt should have just stuck to writing a few episodes a season instead of running the show, I think.

Donna was the best.

Gosh, I don't think of companions in terms of "best," it's mostly just about The Doctor to me. And the villains/stories. Amy's been given the most interesting arc imo, so she may actually have my vote, even though the most recent season wasn't the best.

They should make the Doctor a woman in his next regeneration though. The fandom sh*tstorm + the new direction would be epic and awesome.

A shame. The 6th Doctor was occasionally a straight d*ck in the comics too. Makes it kinda funny. I think if his TV counterpart was anything like that, I would've liked him.

Actually Doctor Six had a bit of a reputation of being a tad off in the Doctor's normal moral sense, not helped by him trying to kill his companion in his first story (in a particularly nasty bout of post-regeneration instability).

(and later throwing a guard into an acid bath)

(and later still using a poisoned cloth to suffocate someone to death and making a pthy comment about it afterwards)

New trailer is out! I'll look for a non-restricted link a bit later.

Quite cool promotional picture- spoilers if you were trying to remain completely unspoiled.

Spoiler:
That pic includes the special weapons Dalek from Remembrance. Word has it that all Dalek models ever created for the series will show up

The trailer on facebook.

Ehhh I'm not impressed. Frankly it'd take a lot to impress me after last season but nothing about that grabs me and makes me want to regain interest in the show again.

Spoiler:
Not even the weeping angels being back...again...

And that promo pic is ridiculous - it's just so completely over the top it looks like it was made by someone who just learned Photoshop recently and was going nuts adding all they could to it.

This has been long rumoured and now confirmed- a drama about the creation of Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/articles/An-Adventure-in-Space-and-Time

Written by Mark Gatiss, very much a respected writer in the nerd community despite not quite having struck gold on his Who stories yet (he's currently being awesome in Sherlock though).

This has always been a surprisingly interesting area, as Doctor Who is the creation of a rather unusual series of events, so much so that there is no clear answer to the question "Who created Doctor Who?"

(This despite Trivial Pursuit saying for years that it was Terry Nation. Gah...)

Of course, now we have to see who they can cast as William Hartnell...

Talking of the 50th anniversary- whilst Moffat has been a bit critical of multi-doctor stories of late (saying that you get five minutes of interesting interaction and then you are basically stuck), David Tennant is suddenly being very mysterious when asked if he is returning and, just to be tantalising, for the first time since leaving the show even Christopher Eccelston has said he could see there being more to do with his version.

When does the new season start again?

No precise date revealed as of yet, but there's a rumour around for last Saturday in August.

Ok great, thanks

It seems the start of September is more likely now.

Confirmed- 1st September!

The hype machine is running again- there is a strong advance vibe for the opening Dalek story after an avdance screening. Now, last time that happened we got Victory of the Daleks with the new Dalek design that was heavily criticised and the whole episode was a bit of a washout. Nonetheless... hopes are high!

There's also apparently a big twist in it that Moffat is very keen for those who have seen it to stay quiet about.

Yeah I just saw the trailer for it on TV. excited.
