I really liked the last episode. I wasn't sure what to expect from the Sontarans, but I definitely found myself enjoying them. The General was very well-played in my opinion.
Very happy to see Martha again, and I liked how she and Donna hit it off immediately; doubly so when in all honesty I was expecting a catfight.
For some reason I wanted to laugh every time the Sontarans were on the screen. I don't know why, but they just came off as incredibly amusing to me.
I did like it a lot, though, I was also happy about Martha being back, and also liked how she and Donna got along right away. And I definitely like Donna a lot. She's great.
It wasn't pointless, it was showing her thinking about what she has been through and that it could have ended up with her family not seeing her again and so on.
doubly so when in all honesty I was expecting a catfight.
I'm glad they didn't go the predictable route of a catfight, each trying to get the attention of the Doctor etc.
Yes, they are the most directly militant race Who ever conceived.
It was a very traditional story, this one. They virtually read off a fan-list of Sontaren traits. The only Sontaren schtick that didn't get mentioned was their never-ending war against the Rutans, which they fight continuously over the centuries, and the Doctor normally mocks them about for doing badly in (though part of the Doctor's nature is revealed when, in the single story which had a Rutan as the bad guy in, the Doctor mocked the Rutan for doing badly in their war against the Sontarens).
The other thing notable Sontaren thing is that it was to a Sontaren that the Doctor first mentioned the word 'Gallifrey' in the series (although it had been visited earlier, it was not named). The stranded-in-time Sontaren Lynx asked the Doctor where he was from, and in reply to the answer said that Gallifrey was a notable world but lacked the power to stand up to a full military assault, an idea that was re-visited in the later 'The Sontaren Invasion' whuich dealt with just that idea. However that was a story mostly played for laughs, and was one of a coiple of stories that made the Time Lords look like idiots, which is one of the reasons RTD and co wiped Gallifrey out the setting in order to get some of the mystery and wonder back.

i didnt find the Sontarons anywhere near as menacing as Styre or Linx from the Pertwee and Baker eras
they seemed quite affable this time round
I never watched the one with Styre but maybe its because these 'new' Sontarans were more involved in the episode and spoke more? (Comparing that to the episode with Linx).

The latest episode was really good. I like what they've done with the Sontarans, they were not as cringy as I thought they would be. I was happy to see Martha back, I've really missed her this series. Love the tension towards to the end. Now, got to spend the whole week waiting for Saturday!
Whoa, whoa, whoa you mean that Martha comes back? When does Rose come back. She was my favorite assistant.
