Hand of God strikes again: Ibarra admits
MONACO, May 7 (SW) - Monaco player Hugo Ibarra has admitted that he scored with his hand, during the Champions League clash with Chelsea in London on Wednesday.
Chelsea had taken a 2-0 lead, which would have been enough to advance to the next round, but things changed when the Argentinian brought the score back to 2-1 just before the half time whistle.
When the Spanish striker Fernando Morientes headed the ball onto the woodwork, it bounced back and was tipped in by Ibarra, who now admitted that it was his left hand with which he scored.
The Swedish referee Anders Frisk failed to see the moment and ignored the comments of Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini and his teammates, for whom this goal was the beginning of the end in this year's European campaign.
"I didn't mean to hit it, but I admit that hadn't I pushed it in with my hand, the ball would have hit my back and there wouldn't have been a goal," Ibarra stated.
The English media have been using the matter to refer to an event eightteen years ago, when another Argentinian, Diego Maradona scored a crucial goal against England with his hand during the quarter final of the Worldcup in Mexico.
The second player to have been helped by the hand of God against an English team, will not be too worried about it however. In the final he will play against the team from which he is on loan at Monaco, FC Porto.
