Bruce Lee was really interested in Ali's fighting and apparently spent hours studying his fighting footage. He'd know quite a bit about Ali, and Bruce Lee doesn't seem to be a particularly arrogant or biased person.
Ok, so your argument is, "Bruce Lee said he could beat him, therefore he could." That's really makes sense to you?
Um, no. Dude thought he was the shit, granted, he was bad-ass, but it is what it is. He had a face he showed in public, the "be like water" Mr. Calm-n-serene and he had his private life, which was sleeping around with a bunch of women and throwing tantrums in his house which included punching holes in walls.

None of it helped him.

What? Bruce Lee is ridiculously arrogant. He's known for being a complete cock with temper problems too lol

I kinda picked up on that in "Dragon."

what evidence do you have that Bruce Lee was ever seriously involved in street fighting?
I'll tell you, all the various 'let's masturbate to Bruce Lee' websites scattered throughout he net, I know, because I've looked through a lot of them. Some are hilarious, in the levels they elevate Bruce Lee.
Granted, it's mostly all "someone knew someone, who heard from a friend that trained with a guy who once severed Bruce Lee lunch" type of anecdotes. Kicking people through fences, kicking everyone's ass on the street, punching flies out of the air etc.

so, he was never arrested, for say, beating a guy up in public?
and I hear you man. My problem is that I just don't know. I think I have a feel for Ali, but I'm totally ignorant on Bruce Lee. I never thought he would stand a chance against Ali, but so many people seem so sure of it.
Like I was saying, all but one of the people I talked to about it would go on and on about how Bruce could do this or that... so, I have this unquietable suspiscion that there is this wealth of evidence out there regarding Bruce Lee as a fighter that I just don't know how to access.

That one's new to me, if so.
They seem so sure because they're basing Lee's ability to kick ass from on what he's shown in the films, him doing finger push-ups and the rumors of him kicking anyone's ass who dared challenge him. Granted, the man sold himself very, very well and he was definitely commited to training himself.
So we have Ali, a tested fighter labeled as one of the greatest of all time, versus an actor with MA skills. By that rational, Jean Claude Van Damme could beat Ali.

I don't know, I think Van Damme is at least an accomplished fighter in his discipline. He fought competitively, I believe.

thats exactly what I would have thought, but nobody in their right mind would bet on van damme over ali, and from my experience, most people would put the nest egg on lee.
I guess its the same thing with samurai swords and asian martial arts in general (the deadly shaolin style and whatnot), but it strikes me as odd that there really isn't even (as far as I can find) an undisputed fight record for Bruce Lee, yet he somehow would hold his own, not just with experienced fighters, but with arguably one of the best fighters to have ever lived.

iirc he never did well
also, and I could be totally wrong on this as well, but he and lee's style are both heavily strike oriented. I personally feel an acomplished grapple or floor based fighter would have a much easier time with Ali, and would probably give them the majority /10
