Maul? Malak? Really?Where's, say, Krayt, who can *raise the dead* and raise himself from the dead? (And not just from spirit transfer)
And Maul... I could see Dooku on the list, but Maul's just a swordmonkey.
You forget, Maul DESTROYED Black Sun, which is rather incredible. He even killed Qui-Gon, a revered jedi master. And Obi-Wan only killed him by tapping into the rage that the death of his master gave him.
I say that Revan is the strongest because he is one of the few who has mastered both the light and dark sides of the force creating a whole different branch of the force. It is perfectly justifiable to use a video game character as an example of who is more powerful. The video games choose someone in SW history who is acuatly powerful to base it off of. Luke had to be uber strong because the movies were based off of him. Anakin had to be uber strong because he was the chosen one.
Without a doubt in my mind: OBI-WAN KENOBI
I'll explain:
1. He kills a Sith Apprentice when only a Padawan after having watched his master/father-figure fall. He is stong and brave.
2. He overcomes his loss and fears and keeps his word to Qui-Gon even if it is dismissing the opinion of Yoda. He knows his duty and is noble.
3. He jumps out of a window, how cool is that?
4. He faces Dooku alone as his Padawan is down. Even though he doesn't win, it shows his honour and sense of duty as a Jedi.
5. He bacomes a Master and is a part of the Jedi Council. Not just anyone gets that. It shows his wisdom, insight, power, control, strength, love and care, importance to the other Jedi.
6. He is a general in the Clone Wars. He wins countless battles, becomes known as the "Negotiator" due to his excellence as a diplomat.
7. He is an excellent pilot even though he doesn't like flying.
8. He cares for and trains both Anakin and Luke Skywalker.
9. He kills General Grievous, not an easy task.
10. He watches the Jedi Order fall yet he still maintains his composure and does his duty, even though his family and friends are gone.
11. He fights Anakin/Darth Vader and wins yet he leaves too soon because he knows that Padme is relying on him.
12. He takes Luke to his uncle and watches over him.
13. He becomes a recluse, a shadow of the man he used to be and yet he isn't.
14. He faces Vader one last time and decides to become one with the force on his own terms.
15. He continues, after his departure from the living world, to train, advise and help Luke Skywalker.
16. And in the end he forgives Anakin once he returns to the light side of the force.
17. This man has lost everyone important to him yet still he goes on because he knows what it is to be a Jedi. The honour, the nobiliy, the sense of duty, the compassion, the diplomacy, the skill, the power, the strength, the contol of ones emotions and feelings, the wisdom, the advice and the selflessness to one's own self.
I cannot comprehend someone actually suggesting anyone else, except maybe Yoda who has been there every step of the way but no, this man has never fallen and has shown great compassion to everyone and everything. In my opinion he is the perfect Jedi. Selfless to the end.
Obi wan is in every film, episode and book for a reason; it all revolves around him and his decisions as well as Anakin/Vader. It is he who has had such an impact on the galaxy and will never be forgotten.
Ok my rant is finished. Yoda is a close second though, followed by Mace.

Any Sith that couldn't destroy Black Sun (which was not permanently killed, it came back) would be a lousy sith.
Nor is he the only Sith to kill revered jedi masters by a long shot.

Well... unless you've got power.
In this topic everyone uses different criteria for ranking.
In terms of raw power/Force potential apart from Anakin, Luke and Lea being on top there is not much evidence.
Since topic says "powerful", then top five will obviously take Sith Lords because while Jedi powers come only from within, Sith use various artifacts, perform dark rituals, drain life energy and feed on emotions of others, which make them much more powerful, than any Jedi.
On top I would rate:
1. Palpatine
2. Sith Emperor
3. Exar Kun
4. About others I don't know much information to compare, could be Nihilus.
Another criteria is strongest. Power is important but it is only one of the variables.
Maul didn't get proper training in the Force and Sith ways, yet, because of his brutal strength and excellent combat skills, he fought simultaneously two powerful Jedi that were properly trained in the Force.
Emotional state plays enormously important part in any fight.
Padawan that turned to darkside can beat his master because master is heartbroken and can't control his emotions from his failure to make good Jedi out of his padawan.
Self-sacrifice is one of the strongest emotions and strengths of Jedi. Love is another one but it is rarely used as old order prohibited attachments. Because of that a jedi knight can win immensely powerful Sith Lord. Reborn Palpatine and Sith Emperor both lost to Jedi Knights.
Also, lets not forget about natural Force talents.
A powerful Jedi Master can loose to a random Sith simply because he can't defend against Force lightning. Very few Jedi in history were capable to absorb Force lightning with bare hands, even absorbing with lightsaber is rare. A Sith can be master of Force lightning and still fail to defend against very same ability.
Same about Force choke, not everyone is capable to break from it, even powerful Jedi masters can get Force choked and fail to break from it.
Sith Emperor became immensely powerful because of his natural talents of draining life energy from others and mind domination. Also, because he was born on planet consumed by darkside, he got attuned to it from very young age. It is really irrelevant what was his original raw potential.
Top ten:
1: Anakin Skywalker (light side)
2: Yoda
3: Darth Sidious
4: Revan (light side)
5: Dath Nihilus
6: Luke Skywalker NJO
7: Mace Windu
8: Obi-Wan Kenobi
9: Meetra Surik
10: Galen Marek (light side)
I don't know why so many people think that the dark side version of a character (eg Anakin) is automatically more powerful. The only reason Anakin lost to Obi-Wan on Mustafar was because of his arrogance and over-estimation of his powers, which were a result of him turning to the dark side. This is also the case with Revan and Marek, they all became stronger when they embraced the light side. Anakin deserves that spot because of his ultimate compatibility with Form V, which he used to defeat the most powerful Form II user in the galaxy, and his ability to control himself when using the light side.
Emperor Vitiate
Illustrious & everybody out there who is doing a wonderful job of discussing this,
Reading through this post, I couldn't help but notice that there was one name missing that quite frankly astounded me. I'm not sure why, but the Sith Emperor Vitiate is nowhere to be found in this discussion. Referencing the Old Republic book "Darth Revan" (SPOILER) the story has Revan, a Jedi Knight, and a Sith Warrior band together to take down Emperor Vitiate. They all fail. Sorta miserably. I will admit, I wonder what might've been had the Sith Warrior not betrayed Revan, but still. One of you makes a point that Marka Ragnos ruled for a century. Well how about ten times that? Vitiate ruled for over a thousand years and not only that, he met Ragnos as a THIRTEEN-YEAR OLD child. On Wookiepedia (search Vitiate or Marka Ragnos) it states that the great Ragnos was VISIBLY IMPRESSED with this child, and literally named him king over an entire world as a boy. I realize that they came roughly at different times, with little overlap, but should it not suffice to at least include the Sith Emperor on this forum? Vitiate is basically just realizing his powers and Ragnos is already impressed with him. Fast forward a thousand years and as well as the three warriors I mentioned earlier, according to the book "Darth Revan" he also defeated Malak and Revan with contempuous ease, literally enslaving their minds as soon as they entered his throne room. So there's my three cents, I actually had to make an account just to give old Vitiate some love XD Peace
