That's always the essential point. That's why you can do it at all. But one of the tacks that can be tried is, rather than for practical reasons, you onstruct a working idea why it is [I[culturally[/I] inappropriate for you to be seperated. The Republic has laws about cultural respect that you can exploit.
"Then you give me no choice but to conform to the laws of Newhaven, of the Republic," Rand says. "If you have not noticed, I know the Law considerably well."
Rand clears his throat.
"The Republic has laws regarding cultural respect. In our culture, it is against our beliefs to be separated from good friends. You, sir, are obstructing that law! If you obstruct it, you are breaking the laws of the mighty Republic, and I will seek to have you incriminated! It is unlawful conduct that you hold, sir. Our religion seeks to keep good friends together, whilst you seek to tear us apart..."
Can Rand have made it so that his comlink allowed Galder and the others to hear that?
You mean the details of 'our religion?'
Should not be too difficult.
The religion is a little known practice deep in the Outer Rim; one of the miners who came to our installation was a practitioner of this religion, and shared it with us. We found it to our liking, and became members of the Friendship Circle.
Followers of the Friendship Circle must maintain strong friendships with those around them, and being parted from these friends is intollerable, unless the parting is approved by the bonded friends of the Friendship Circle. If it is unapproved, those being parted must find means to get together again, else they must fast until the friendship is attained again.
...wow, I feel like a Jedi...
Fair start! Work out the details for everyone and you are onto a winner.
I know this might seem a little scholarly and slow and "not thgrusting my sabre a hundred times into someone's face " (though man, didn't you get enough of that LAST story?), but being able to do this kind of thing is what will transform you from violent outlaws into a sophisticated and intelligent Galactic menace.
Hurray for Galactic Menaces!
...
Anyway, continuing Rand's new faith... 😛
The God of the Friendship Circle is known as Calmas, whom they must make sacrifices of various sorts to to keep friendship with him. If the friendships of the Friendship Circle are broken momentarily, they must fast. If the fast goes on too long, they must end it by taking their own lives and the lives of those who broke the friendship, in the name of Calmas. Usually it is not resorted to, but it is a cultural thing; rarely are the friendships broken.
