okay, haven't posted for a while, got a question.I was recalling, the other day, a statement made the other day, by Professor Ivo, in Meltzer's Red Tornado arc on JLA (Tornado's Path?).
Anyways, he stated something along the lines of their being twelve (?) true immortals who walk the DC Earth, which got my wondering which ones there were.
So, anyways, lets eliminate supernatural entities (Nabu, the wizard Shazam, Mordru, Boston Brand, vampires, Etrigan), aliens who look like they'll live forever or people using technology (Superman and the Manhunter, in the DC One Million continuity, Sodam Yot and R'as a Ghul in the 31st century), and gods, angels, and elementals, mythical concepts, and the like (The Pantheons, the Endless, the New Gods, the Princess of Gemworld, Swamp Thing and Firestorm, Phantom Stranger, Lucifer, Mxyzptlk, Uncle Sam), and people who gained immortality through some sort of empowerment from a supernatural being (Captain Marvel, Black Adam, Kid Eternity, Dr. Fate).
So basically, humans who became immortal who don't rely on a sentient outside power source for it.
Okay, so lets see:
Vandal Savage
The Shade
Immortal Man/Resurrection Man (their immortality counts as the same)
Professor Ivo
Anton Arcane
Circe
Mogain Le Fey
Doctor Mist
Doctor Occult
Felix Faust
Madam Xanadu
Tim Hunter (survives till the end of time)
Hob Gandling
Multi-Man
Should we eliminate the ones who use magic to preserve their lives? Or do you think they count for Ivo's list? According to Sandman, back when it was part of standard continuity, there were many incredibly long lived people (like those who remember "the true Atlantis, upon which all others are based), though few "true immortals." Can we count Carter and Shiera? They 'die' and are reborn.... but by that criteria, Ressurection Man is off the list too, although you could make the distincstion that he retains his memories (most of the time).
And I guess we can eliminate the Vertigo ones, since by the time of Ivo's statement, most of them weren't in regular DC continuity.
Thoughts? Who are we missing? Who doesn't count? lets see how close to the "true twelve" we think we can come.
