In the Green Lantern mythos, the Oans set themselves up as Guardians of the Universe and divided space up into 3600 sectors to be protected by Green Lanterns.
However there at at least 100-150 billion galaxies in just the observable universe. 3600 sectors would mean that each Lantern would have to protect tens of millions of galaxies (even allowing that some younger galaxies would not have life), which is not only completely ridiculous, but contradicted on panel by the fact that there are many Lanterns located in regions of the Milky Way galaxy alone.
And if by "universe" that they really mean "our galaxy" that's still millions of stars each to protect, and the Oans should rightly be called the Guardians of the Galaxy (copyright allowing). On the other hand, wasn't Maltus supposed to be at the centre of the universe? Which means not the Milky Way - which means multiple galaxies.
Has the extent of the Guardians' influence been explained in detail? Has most of the universe really never even heard of them? Does all this mean that Green Lanterns can cross trans-galactic distances easily and routinely?

Your mixing our universe with DC's. You can buy that the GL corps exist but not that they could sufficiently patrol the universe? Who says that the DCU is even setup the same as ours or is even the same size?

Earth is the key to the multiverse. It's a very important location so it has more lanterns than usual protecting it.

Yes, they do cross galaxies easily, IIRC a GL can cross the entire universe in a few hours. Here is a diagram of how the sectors look:

Obviously GLs cannot be there to address every problem on every planet. There are a lot of events on earth and other planets where no GL was available to help.

Thanks. I thought I'd seen some diagram years ago of how it looked, but couldn't quite remember it. That pic is a lot newer.
