no, when someone becomes animagi they choose what they want to become. remember in the third book sirius said something likes James and i became large animals so that they could handle Lupin and wormtail became a rat so that he could push the thing to freeze the whomping willow.
They didn't become those animals for those reasons. They never said that. The fact that Sirius and James could handle Lupin is because that is what animal they are. Likewise with Peter. It is all coincedence.
hey, just found this and thought it looked interesting. I first thought that Fawkes would be an Animagi, but if he exploded into flames every few weeks then wouldn't the person die? My thoughts are that even though I think JK has dismissed this theory, Crookshanks is James Potter. It's really far fetched, becasue James was always a stag and I think Rowling said it wasn't true, but think about it. In The Prisoner of Azkaban, he protected Sirius when Harry was going to kill him, and Lupin and Sirius seemed to have a special connection to him. Crookshanks always tried to eat Scabbers, so maybe it was James trying to kill Peter. Anywho, not sure if you all agree on this, but I think it's a definite possibility. Although, now that I think about it, the Marauder's Map would have shown if any creature inside the grounds was an Animagi, registered or not, so I guess that kinda shoots down my theory. Oh well, just a thought.
I'm sure with much practice one could turn into two animals. It never says you can't. yea but how do we know that James is dead? Whenever Harry has memeories of his parents' murder, like when the Dementors make him remember it, he only hears his mother screaming, never his father. So, even though everyone has said that James is dead, couldn't there be even the smallest, infinitisimal chance that he somehow survived?

erm... nice theory but... if James is Crookshanks, why doesn't he change back and say "Harry I wuv u, give me a hug!"?

Cuz he is shy? Because he likes being a cat? Because he is afraid of Harry trying to kill him because he has been hiding from Harry for all these years and has been close to him for a few years and saying anything?
*sigh* Crookshanks is an Kneazle.
"Crookshanks is part Kneazle (Nr), which accounts for his unusual intelligence and his ability to identify suspicious characters, most notably Pettigrew when disguised as Scabbers the Rat (PA). But he also recognizes and disapproves of cheating, judging by the way he stared at Harry and Ron when they were making up answers on their Divination homework (GF14)."
Yea, the more and more I think about the James being Crookshanks thing it sounds less realistic. Phoenix had an interesting point about why Crookshanks wouldn't have revealed himself sooner; maybe he doesn't want to shock Harry or ruin some plan he had. Even so, I now don't think James is Crookshanks, because as NightCrawler pointed out, he came out of Voldemort's wand. So, maybe if Crookshanks is not James, he may be an important character that we have or haven't met yet, but once again, the more I think about it, the more I doubt it.
