Have traditional martial arts been distorted?

I strongly think they have. Most have lost their traditional touch anyways. They're distorted into self defense stuff when most have more of a philosophical meaning to them.Just wanted to know what you guys thought about it.

I think that just about everymartial has been distorted...TKD for example...I think Original TKD would be awsome if there were still people who teached it..

TKD was invented only 60 odd years ago 😄

It's strongly based on kicking right?

yes and ummmm maybe not tkd but something like hwarang do or something like that...that's where TKD came from i think..

TKD came from the fusion of Japanese Karate with a peasent street game and the martial art of the korean nobles. Because Koreans wanted identity and are taller the legs are used more than in Karate. It has a trapping element which is rarely shown these days.

Martial arts havent been distorted, but changed to fit the society where they are taught.

so yea they have been disorted.....

Stop judging martial arts on a video game.

Traditional TKD focuses more so on flair, technique and range than actually attacking. Although that is obviously incorporated.

Hence why kicks are more of a focal point.

Most teachers nowadays incorporate a much larger mix of upper and lower body attacks.

I've been taught in both, so I can use both. But I prefer my kicks.

what's ur level? do u know any other? what do u think of TKD Vs aikido.
which one's better for self defence, my own belief is aikido, but what do u think?

TKD is really divided into Poomse and Competition fighting in WTF style in the other styles it is more semi contact. Its reason for high kicking was when it was developed from Karate in 1944, the Koreans wanted it to be different. When I got my black belt in it a long time ago, I lost interest it is a very limited style and the kicking is whilst flashy, very poor in comparison to a Muay Thai Roundhouse. Its lack of effective groundwork and its reliance on oriental strikes makes it weak for self defence in comparison to something like Sambo.

I started Wing Chun aboot a year ago...n ot much philosophy there just kill your opponent as fast as possible...it probably isn't taught as it used to be though i guess and at least in Geramny it is very Commercial...I still like it a lot though..its a good syste,....very logical...

Very effective strikes in self defence however it has little ground work and when people are drunk thats where fights end up on the ground😄

Yes that's true...I don't drink...and we try to train to not go to the ground...and I don't know if its traditional but at my school we practice fighting on the ground too....

Yeah the traps used are very primitive though in most forms of Kungfu.

😄

Strangely Tai Chi has some good locks, how weird is that 😕

to be honest I have not muchclue aboot martial arts I just do one that seemed logical to me.......I think it is a good system too...especially in close combat....but it has its flaws...I guess you will need to use basic wrestling on the floor...when you are drunk you are probablly not able to do kmore anyways.....

But we try to make the attacks reflexes so we don*t have to think aboot it but do the right thing right away.....

Yes reflex training is very common in traditional styles and a good way to start. On the ground JiuJitsu and Wrestling are much more effective.

It's not about which one is better for self-defence. It's about which one is better for you.

I personally feel TKD is more appropriate as it's a range fighting style that concentrates on defence as much as attack.

I'm a 4th dan black belt.

Where do you study AC I got my Black with Yin Yang in Nottingham, I also trained with Panther in Lewisham😄

I lost interest in TKD when I got heavily into grappling in the mid nineties 😄
