The only reason a person in the mordern world would join a Martial Art is for self defense, I'm sure those requesting knowledge of the the philosophy of the martial art could just ask the sensai, I'm sure he'd comply.
The only problem is most teachers today don't even know the full history of an art. Most teachers don't realize kung fu is the terrible mis translation of chaun fa.What's worse is that most don't even realize the purpose Chaun Fa had for Buddhist monks. When it comes to self defense, the traditional martial arts,in all reality, have real no self defense equivelent. Now some do,but most teach katas and techniques as self defense when they where actualy created for a different purpose. That's why Bjj did so well in real fighting situations. It was made for that soul purpose.
