You must have saw a different fight. Obi-Wan was kicking Maul's ass and breaking his lightsaber. Maul ONLY achieved the upper hand when he Force pushed Obi into the hole.
Maul is officially a Sith Lord, but he is the apprentice... Sidious never kept a Sith Lord worthy of the title under him.
And to be honest, the fight could go either way. Now, Maul is probably a lot better then the movis elude to (And if you read any EU material on him apparently he was demi-god like) but this IS Obi-Wan. Obi-****ing-"There is no luck"-Wan Keninja. AKA the Velvet Jedi Master.
He can hang with Maul, sure.

By all accounts by Maul fans, he was in such prime condition that th fight as we saw it wouldn't be enough hardly to make him sweat. He was still ready and able to duel Obi-Wan. If anything, Qui Gon and Obi-Wan, with their Ataru forms, must have been breathing hard when THEy fought HIM.
Look, no offense, but Darth Maul isn't that powerfull, to not break a sweat against an experienced Jedi Master, much like Qui Qon Jin. I think that defeating Qui Qon Jin not only made Maul tired, but also made him overconfidnet. If he defeated the master, he should have no problem defeating the padawan, right? Thats what he thought, and his overconfidence destroyed him.
I personally think without Qui Qon Jin, Obi Wan wouldn't beat Maul.

It seems you say that the only reason Obi-Wan would lose was because Maul force pushed him in a hole. Did you even see TPM? Obi-Wan was tearing Maul up even with his double-bladed lightsaber.
Anyone would with a damn fury, and a force push is nothing cheap.
Even if there was no damn hole obi wan would fly a few meters and hit the ground then, maul would have time to regen some focus and continue the fight. I dont matter that maul only had one blade left, he could take a padawan without any problems.

No but it makes you fight different harder. Put more strength in it attack uncontrolled and in different ways. It does not make you better but it sure as hell will surprise your oponent for a little while.
Arbiter, uh, did you see how many kicks he got in on Obi? Without Qui-Gon he would've been dead much sooner. Out of the whole entire fight, Obi only got one good hit against Maul when he cut his saber in half. Obi's power won't increase in this fight because he won't watch his master die either. Next, Maul clearly had Obi at his mercy at the end. In this fight Qui-Gon's lightsaber wouldn't even be around.
As for Shadow Star's question: No clue, those Force fields were a nice touch though. Maybe someone spent a few hours just getting up to there to do something. Er... I don't know.
