why does anybody like rap?!?!?!

Started by SnakeEyes20 pages

I don't really like rap... at all. Granted, I haven't heard the "good" rap that is out there; but I don't really think I want to. I guess I just don't like rap as a whole. I mean, I'm exposed to mainstream hip-hop and rap every single day (on the radio, TV, at school, ect.) and even if I heard some of the rappers that are supposedly really good, I still don't think I could bring myself to like it. The genre, in my opinion, isn't really quality music.

You just contradicted yourself

How?

You said you haven't heard good hip hop but yet you already judged it

yeah I know. I don't really care about the lyrics most of the time. I find some of the songs, however, insulting to women. But other than that I like rap.

Have a listen to Blackalicious, The Roots, Brother Ali, Jurassic 5, Lyrics Born, Haiku D'Etat and Qwel. These guys put out outstanding hip hop without insulting women IMO. I'm sure the good Dr can recommend some more.
Snake Eyes, i understand hip hop may not be your thing. If i was exposed to mainstream crap on a daily basis i might find myself reaching for the gun, but the groups i listed above are really worth a listen if you want to hear hip hop at its best.

Maybe you misunderstood me then, let me make it clearer. I said I don't think that I would like it. I didn't say: "Hmmm, I've never heard "quality" hip-hop and rap before, but I hate it."
When I said the genre isn't really quality music, what I should've said was: From what I've heard, rap and hip-hop, as a whole doesn't strike me as quality music and, even though there are talented rappers out there that I have not heard, the genre of music does not apply to my taste in music.
I don't mean to judge what I haven't heard beforehand, but I can make a prediction that I won't enjoy listening to it, simply because of the fact that I am not into rap/hip-hop, even if there are talented musicians within the category.

I might give it a shot, just to be open-minded and listen to some of the artists you guys like.

Try MF Doom, NWA, Aesop Rock, Illogic, Nas, etc

Aesop and Doom may be a little abstract for a first time listener especially if hip hop isnt really their thing. Aesop as much as i love the guys music should issue a "Aesop code breaker" with his CD so people can grasp all his obscure references. Doom is a BIT easier to understand but still a bit off the wall for most non heads IMO.

😂 The first time I listened to MF Doom I was addicted

adding to what Kool and Inspectah said, i recommend:

Cannibal Ox
Illogic
Aesop Rock (not really a fan, but his music is very popular in the underground scene)
Murs
Mr. Lif
MF Doom
Brother Ali
I Self Devine
El-P
Prefuse 73

If you're just starting out I'd listen to Immortal Technique, Outkast, Public Enemy, and Wu Tang. Those are some pretty good crossover artists... Immortal Technique isn't that great but he really seems to attract new rap listeners for some reason.

Old Nas is good too

Immortal Technique attracts alot of mainsteram listeners, cuz he has the same heavy voice passions not giving a **** voice/attitude that pac had...im just guessing.

That could be it.. I do think it's his straight forward delivery. He makes it really easy for people to understand what he's talking about, cause he doesn't beat around the bush at all. Kinda like Pac.

So which Underground rapper is like Biggy?

Hieroglyphics's Third Eye Vision was how I got into good hip hop. Try that. Really easy to get into and it doesn't insult women but they do talk about their love of weed though 😉

it's about fluency with rhymin ingenuity..." - Del

Nothin but love for 😮‍💨

You can't give a hip-hop virgin Ox and El-P, their ears will die ❌

I think Zion I are good ice breakers, a lot of their songs have a very mainstream sound, except with much better lyrics and real soul vocalists to sing the hooks. Their newest album sounds like Kanye West possessed by The Roots.

I love making people listen to True & Livin 😊
