Eh...that's a hard question to answer. XD
It's certainly different. I'll start with the main complaints I have. The world is not as well defined as it needs to be, the action is pretty poor imo, and the story just gets really odd.
On the other side, I like the art, the comedy is good(particularly when they break the 4th Wall) and the characters are pretty much all likable(so far). I have no one I hate so far that comes close to, say, Hodi Jones. And the characters I do like are all awesome.
And one of the villains has a power so absurdly broken it would make Tobi feel so inadequate. He literally cannot be touched unless he wants to be touched. So funny.
So yeah, I'd recommend it. Give it a chance if you're interested.

I'd say it never gets painful, but you will wish it'd try and be more mold-breaking at times and some arcs don't impress.
It's apparently very akin to One Piece. So...can't be that bad.
Also on D. Gray-Man, the pacing is a bit...fast. It's like the opposite of Kekkaishi in that regard. Things escalate to fast in my opinion. Which is good when the arcs reach climaxes but otherwise...eh.

Like One Piece, it does have a very conventional arc structure, but also some quite cool moments.

I prefer to actually breathe every now and then. Though...D. Gray-Guy does have some legit scenes that let me do that so I can't complain. The scene on the ship was heart breaking.
Well, I like how the manga tries to put effort in detailing backstories of and fleshing out even the somewhat less important side characters, which does, in theory, make it easier to like the characters.
Actually, one thing that really endeared Nodoka towards me is how unexpected her development was, namely, that when she was trying to confess to Negi, while I hoped she would, I thought that, due to her character archetype, it just didn't seem likely and thought that all I would get is her making ridiculous puns to avoid saying "I WUV YOU," only for her to actually succeed in confessing her feelings to Negi, being the first classmate to do so. I already had a fondness for Nodoka because moe characters make me smile like a loser, but in defying a standard manga convention like that so early on and so thoroughly, it cemented her as probably my favorite character, sundering the foundations of my pretenses of manliness as well as making me forget that, dude, she totally just admitted she is in love with a ten year old boy.
Stuff.
One thing that I have noticed, that you did mention before, is that in Negima, chapters are chapters. There is almost invariably some resolution at the end of each chapter, usually of a conflict that presents itself at the beginning of the chapter, and only a vague pretense of an arc surrounding the chapters. Or rather, every chapter is basically a stand-alone story set within the canvas of the arc. Admittedly this was weird to get used to, but am okay with it now.
Moar stuff.
But yeah I am liking it now.

We get a glimpse of the Vizards, which officially means that Hiyori did in fact manage to survive.Cut back to Ichigo and Co, who're taking care of the kids from last chapter. We see a flashback to the fight and it seemed pretty cool.
Cut to Ikkaku and Yumichika and they're running to investigate something. Cut back to Ichigo and we see a new man named Ivan Azgiaro. Judging from his appearance, he kinda reminds me of an Arrancar.

Ignored it. You know, I'm starting to slowly dislike Uryu now even though he has a cool start in the series. Ichigo has a nice flat-screen BTW.
This is way different than the chapters of pointless fighting. The pacing's better and it's not so barren.
More pre-SS arc flashbacks.

Yea, the series doesn't mess around with 'will they or won't they' for long. It just does it.
This is the series' way of handling thing, and basically the writer knows the cliches really well, so he'll set up the scenarios just so he can cut to the chase and keep things moving anyway.
Or rather, every chapter is basically a stand-alone story set within the canvas of the arc.
Good way to put it.
