So based on these scenes we can conclude that the captains assumes the following regarding their method of sealing.

Only one Bankai can be sealed at a time.

The seal can be broken, and that learning how to break the seal would lessen the advantage the Quincy have over the Shinigami.

The sealing requires a period of time which they can use to weaken or potentially kill the opponent.
Those aren't bad assumptions really.

It took a whole Arrancar just to seal Ol Yama's zanpakuto and when Wonderweiss was gone the seal was broken. And assuming it took a while isn't too farfetched either. In fact, I'm surprised at how fast it worked.

And the Qunicys picked the wrong opponents (assuming they cannot use the Bankais against the Captains, which they probably can). Byakuya can fall on his proficency in Kido. Soifon has her Shunko and assassian techniques. I'm not entirely sure about Komamura and Toshiro though. They don't seem to have a secondary talent to fall upon, unless you count Toshiro's strategic genius. I just wonder if the three Lieutenants that haven't used Bankai before actually have them now. It'd put an edge on the Shinigamis side. Although, it'll be interesting to see how Omeada fights in this one, seeing as the last time he fought (against Barragan), all he did was run and cry.

Komamura's thing is being tough and strong.

The main problem is all of them took the same approach at the same time with no experimenting, and we know Soi Fon prefers non-bankai anyway. Also, it'd be logical for *Renji* to go first in the case those assumptions are right.

WHy would it be logical for Renji to go first? From an author's perspective, people are going to be more interested in seeing what new tricks Hihio Zabimaru has and how he looks over seeing Senbonzakura Kageyoshi for the billionth time. I think what's going to happen is with the Captain's Bankais sealed (with exception to Kenpachi, Shunsui, and Ukitake), the Lieutenants will have a chance to show off their skills and maybe even their Bankais if they have acheived them.

Indeed, that is the most notable flub. Kensei would have been a better choice over Soi-Fon. And perhaps but Byakuya always seems to be the lead by example type and it would seem weird if he asked Renji to use it in his stead.

To be honest, I'm suprised Mayuri didn't use his Deus ex Machina prepping skills to allow the shinigami to counter this. Why would you pick Kensei over Ikkaku Aura? I'm suprised.

Ikkaku is less willing to use his Bankai.

Ohhh....Wonder if Ikkaku's going to purposely hold back this time.

He'll go all out just to empower the Quincy with his own Bankai for the challenge.

Wow. Byakuya got trolled hard. Eat your heart out, Tsukishima.

All these matches are gonna be one-sided if the Vandenreich can use Bankais against their owners.

Now see people, this is why you don't complain about nothing happening in a chapter where something did actually happen.

See, THIS was a chapter where nothing happened. Effective in further contextualizing the conflict and disparity but in terms of narrative not giving us anything new.

Spoiler:
Though Shunsui losing his eye was more effective than someone losing their arm again....unless it was just a normal cut.

So why did he lose an eye and not his head?

Because Kubo doesn't know how to kill good guys that are important?

Loved the crap-fest everyone had when they realized that bankai could be stolen. But I guess nothing happened in this chapter either.

To be fair I'd like to see his bankai before he's killed off.

I'm in the same boat as you Astner. though I amsure Kubo will show all of the captains' bankais before deciding to off one or two if he ever does.

and while it does seem pretty bad in hindsight of those captains using their bankais so quickly because they thought they would get them back after breaking the seal, I think it is much more severe. in this chapter, Toshiro doesn't seem to be able to talk to the spirit of his zanpakuto. given that his zanakuto is what gives him the power to do bankai and shikai, then wouldn't it mean that shikai is a no go for the captains, or I am forgeting something here?

The Captains(save for I guess Shinji and Rose) are all effectively powerless to these guys. As much as some would hate to admit it, this is raising the stakes. How we got there was meh(I see the reasoning and it worked for me, others not so much) but it's certainly better than...

Hitsugaya: A Vasto Lorde is above any captain!
Shunsui: Lol shikai.

Shinji and Rose certainly have the advantage of the hollow form. But I hope that Kubo would use this opportunity to have the captains fight strategically.

Also, wouldn't Kenpachi be unfazed by this? I have a feeling that I'll love Kenpachi's role in this war.

That would definitely be something. If the zanpakuto spirit is gone, maybe the sword in general becomes a dud. In that case the captains really are screwed.

I don't like how we got here and this chapter didn't have much of anything in it, but the stakes being raised could lead to some well overdue house-cleaning of unecessary characters.

@Aura: couldn't Yamamoto have just one-shot all the espada with his shikai?

Forget Yamamoto, whose Shikai rivals most Bankais.

Shinji or Aizen could oneshot the Vasto Lordes after using their Shikais.
