Just like he modified his bankai to self-destruct if it attacked him, he modified it this time to counter any weird abilities his opponent might use.
How would he even know to modify it specifically for this type of ability?

So one of the mods Mayuri put in for his new bankai just happened to be layers of nerves even though there's no possible way he could've know he was going to fight an oppenent like this? Still I guess its better than the convenient ability of other bankai, Rukia's in particular, offered.
the modification was making Ashisogi capable of coming up with countermeasures. The modification was pre-planned, not the countermeasure itself.

It's still a pretty anti-climatic finish for Mayuri to wrap things up so quickly.

Hmmm....So Mayuri didn't give Ashisogi the countermeasures before he encountered the enemy: this is what I thought had happened. It's still a pretty anti-climatic finish for Mayuri to wrap things up so quickly.
The ending statements imply that the fight isn't over.
This fight is definitely not over. But it can't be as simple as Pernida taking control of Ashisogi 'cause that's been done already and Mayuri already has the self-destruct contingency. I'm interested to see how Mayuri loses this fight... or wins after being nearly killed... or some variation of those scenarios.
Anyhow, this is the most interested I've been in Bleach since Yhwach fought Yama.

Yhwach technically didn't fight Yama. Or rather I'm not sure how Yhwach handled Yama could be considered a fight.
Shouldn't Kenpachi have the most potential considering the Sternritter labelled him as a war potential or something. That and coupled with Ukitake losing his "Piece of Eden" should put him at the top. Byakuya doing training with the Zero Division should rank him second in fighting potential with Mayuri following up in 3rd with his prep and adaptable bankai. Not sure where Kyoraku and Toshiro fall under and I don't really seen any potential from the vizard captains atm.
I forgot to mention Soi Fong and Komamura. For Komamura I'm not sure where he's supposed to be as his "were-wolf" form appears to have expired. Soi-Fon, like Toshiro, relied a bit too much on her bankai but unlike Toshiro the fruit of her training didn't offer much as it turned out that mastering shunko didn't give her much of an edge.
