BEFORE THE PELICANS TAKE OFF
The black Spec-Ops Elite came crashing over the table, supplies and other objects clattered to the floor, along with the alien corpse, landing with a dull thud in a bloody heap. Ten signaled the Pelican, but only Nuron’s enhanced gear picked it up through the rock. “This is Spartan Zero-One-Zero, you don’t have enough time to wait for me and then take off. Once this thing blows if your caught in the blast you’ll lose control and drop. Take off now.”
Back in the Pelican Nuron looked at the others, he glanced at the floor before speaking. “We need to take off. This station is going to super nova and take out everything here. Garrison, take us out.” He said, his voice unusually grim.
”I can’t leave a brother behind like that.” Spartan 116’s voice came from behind him.
Nuron turned around, “I don’t want to leave him behind either, any more than you do.” He said, “But we can’t do anything for him. You know what he’d expect.” Nuron stopped, and turned away. “What he’d want us to do.” He took in a deep breath, “Ten is a hard man to kill. He’s been like that since he was a kid. Take us up Garrison.” Nuron knew it was little consolation, there was no way Ten could survive the stations blast.
AFTER THE PELICANS TAKE OFF
Inside the facility, Ten picked up Nuron’s old combat knife and hurled it at the enemy Elite with all his might and skill. It sliced through the air and thudded into the Elite’s face, who’s shields had been drained. He’d already wasted time, and already he could feel the air draining towards the bottom of the facility, the Black Fusion core was generating a massive gravitational flux as it went critical.
Ten dashed for the Elevator, remembered it wasn’t in this shaft, but jumped anyway. His blades raked a line down the wall, sparking as he fell. He landed on the debris of the elevator on the bottom, and then climbed up onto the bottom floor and ran to the other elevator, and made his way back down to Zero’s body. More time wasted. He knelt down beside her and pulled a chip out of her helmet, her memories, all filed away. Tucking it away, he made the journey back up top, the sealed rooms now vacuums as the air was being sucked into the core.
Ten ran out of the base and his visor damped as the sun washed over him. The Pelicans were long gone by now, he could barely track the small specks above the cloud line. If they came back now they would be caught in the blast. Just then he heard the sound of a Ghost, the recon for the main Covenant army was here. He ran to the nearest tree and hauled himself up quickly and waited.
The Covenant craft sped along at a decent pace, that was until a black blur landed on the hood denting it, and nearly tipping it over. The driver let out a startled warble before he was ripped of his seat and his spine was snapped while he was hurled into a tree. Ten boosted the ghost, moving at full speed. Behind him he saw two other Ghosts chasing him, and plasma bolts shot by.
He’d only been driving for less than a minute, leaving the facility far behind. The ground by the facility started to implode slowly, and the entrance bent and twisted out of shape, then everything turned into a blazing white light, easily seen from space, and the shockwave leveled the trees, taking out the bulk of the Covenant force.
The ground was shaking violently and Ten wrestled with the controls. Behind him he could feel the heat on his back, and knew the light was pure white, as bright as a star behind him from the detonation. The shaking caused him to bit a rock, his Ghost sparked and flipped, throwing him off into a tree at the edge of another small forest. The Ghost, still running yet slowing down, bounced sparked and dented it’s way into what looked like a rock slide, as there was a cliff to his far left, and it disappeared behind the rocks before finally flipping onto it’s back and stopping.
Ten ,disoriented, got to his feet and kept running, he was surprisingly fast for his size, then again he was a Spartan, in fact he was running over 30mph, and slowly gaining speed. Behind him, the ghost that was farthest back was slowly lifted into the air by the shock wave, the pilot thrown off and hurled into the air, before the forces of the shockwave killed him. The ghost was consumed by an inferno, being ripped apart and finally twisted and melted into slag.
The second ghost was also lifted into the air, but the shockwave of the inferno stopped, so it did not meet the same fate, though even though they weren’t in it, the pilot of the ghost was cooked, his limp form was hurled into a rock and it literally splattered over the entire rock face. The ghost was hurled ahead end over end.
Ten had kept running, and found his way behind a very large boulder, easily two to three stories high. He didn’t flinch as the ghost was hurled into a tree beside him, the machine crumpled, debris and blue flame flying everywhere before it exploded. Not before the tree, nearly snapped from the impact, started to topple. The top half slowly moving sideways as the coming shockwave pushed it.
Even though he was against the massive rock, Ten was hurled forward when the shockwave met. He flew forward, smashing against a tree. His visor smashed into the trunk of the tree, and the whole thing cobwebbed. This particular tree didn’t topple because of the massive boulders cover, however most of the trees around him were blown over. Ten was knocked unconscious. Not to long after, the shock wave receded, and Ten was bounced along some, but not much. He was lucky he was so small compared to his weight of almost 3 tonnes. That, and his lucky boulder are what kept him from behind crushed.
