My response,
I am facinated with the technology, and the attempt to make a real lightsaber. i think they are fantastic things. Anyway iI am sort of an inventor myself, somewhat.
What is your facination with the devil and evil things? or why do you even like Star Wars at all, why are you in this forum?
Fair enough, I can see you POV from a scientific standing.
But you wont make a real lightsaber, no matter how hard you try. Whatever lasers you make are gonna have to be too powerful to make a steady beam without risking injury to yourself or others. So...whats the point of trying to invent something that is potentially lethal? What are you going to do with it once you've built it? Sit there and turn it on and off, just to say 'hey look what I can do!'? Yeah it would be cool to have a functional lightsaber, but realistically, I wouldnt want one unless it was low powered enough to produce a beam, but not powerful enough to cut through anything. And that's pretty much impossible...
You are thinking of the potential risks, not only to yourself but to others, of producing a high powered laser beam, right? Not just from a technological 'look what I can do' point of view? Not to mention, Im pretty sure industrial strength lasers are illegal for this type of use.....but you'd have to check on your own laws. You do realise you're making a lethal weapon, dont you? This is not a toy, its a weapon. I really hope you understand this.
Oh yeah, as for the last part...Im not fascinated with the devil or evil things..I chose these pictures because they look cool. I dont embrace evil or whatever, because Im not an evil person. I like Star Wars because it is fantasy. I like most scifi things, because they dont exist in the real world.
I dont think he's trying to make a 'real' light saber, even if he thinks he is we all know that the power source for such a weapon and the adjoining technology is nothing short of fiction. But I think he's just trying to make an attempt to build a hilt that does not have a permanantly attatched blade or staff to it. If you look at all the high quality options out there like Force FX and Park, yes they are cool and I think that their blades are more than adequate , but at the end of the day if they could somehow extend and retract the blade they would be sooo much cooler and more true to the real thing.
I agree that it is futile for LIGHTSABER to persue some sort of laser or even worse blow-torch based idea. Niether of these ideas will truly cut anything at speed so I think his energys would be best spent trying to find a way to extend and retrack an existing lit up blade.
Basically if a Force FX or Park saber could extend and retract from the hilt it would be perfect. Considering that ( in my opinion) 80% of the fun with a Force FX saber is the sound effects anyway.

those laser pics I posted are apparently real. i phoned the company and the green lasers can be seen from a great distance outside. They can actually cut through materila, and they meet regulation saftey standards. They only seem to cut through dark material. Lighter material they reflect. But infa red light can cut through other material.Just some info.
Yes a green laser that can shoot up from the hilt to a series of reflecting mirrors and back would be way better than the immitation ones. Perhaps I could market it.

Unfortunately the legal ramifications of having a very powerful hand held laser make it impossible to really try and make a working powerful hand held one. But the principle of using the most powerful green laser, 9 I say green because it seems to be the best visibility one) and expanding the optics to make it a very thick beam, seem possible. i talked with one of the people at the laser office, they saud the optics can be enlarged. This particular green laser can be seen from a great distance away, check the pics out. Now if you combined this green laser with a ultra violet laser, ( ultra violet ones are invisible but can cut through more stuff) you may have a interesting beam capacity. Then you build them into the hilt of a lightsaber, and as the beams come out the handle, you use reflecting mirrrors, about 12 or 10 of them , ( smallones at the base of the opening of the lightsaber) and reflect them back to the top of an extendable rod comming from the inside of the lightsaber, and they also have 10 or 12 small tiny morrors that rebound the beams back in a circular pattern in a continuos rotation and you may have a very neat beam, that is actually made from green laser lightm using crystal, and ultra violet light. To make it powerful you may need a more powerful source than a couple of batteries.
Anyway that is my thought on how it could be made.
The biggest problem, is that it would cost alot for the lasers, a couple of thousand dollars minimum. And to get them to make a combination of green laser and ultra violet laser light might be more expensive.
The problem is always in the size of the power sopurce. There are lasers that can cut through metal and thick metal at that. they could cut through other substances easily. But they need a large power source.
To all,
Sorry guys, I said Ultra Violet light beam, it should have been infa red beam.
i was talking to the man at the hand held laser shop, he said a visible green beam could be made at 350mW and then another beam put beside or with it making the beam 750mW and this would be very powerful. It is even possible to take out ithe inner mechanism and buildit into a hand held laser prop, such as a blaster or lightsaber. Unfortunately they cannot make it small enough to fit into a hand held phaser like the Star Trek shows. This beam, that it emits is a visible green beam that can be seen in a light room apparently.
It would be possible to get the beam up to a higer intensity.
guessing thats a big saber torch you could do some really cool effects with.....so that blade 3 weapon...it just makes sense to me that a high powered laser shoots out from one point ummm soaked in by the other end of the weapon and lessay recycled to keep the power flow going forever...etc....not very technical I know but hey look at my name...lol....that blade 3 weapon if you know what Im talking about seems about the closest possible and would be most spectacular saber type weapon able by normal men to create(and cut some bagels with..lol)

those lasers are real, the green ones can be seen even in a lighted room. Look at the site and check out the videos.

Nice try!
You couldn't make it more obvious that you're trying to subliminally advertise.
There is a name for that. Can't remember it.
Oh yeah... SPAM!
