Perhaps not, but of course that was the JLA arc directly after Trial by Fire when J'onn finally had his moment of top tierness (ermm). Superman dominated him there in the Tenth Circle.

If bullets can't hurt him I doubt that the flat of a blade is going to do much to him.

Do you know what the flat of the blade is? its the part between the edges that is completely blunt. It's also, if you look at the scan, where he was blocking the attacks.

You don't parry a sword attack but blocking the edge with your sword, you knock away the attack with the flat against the flat.

My guess is that it was a part of his body shaped into a sword. Could be wrong though. Claremont never really said anything about it in the book.
