I'm from the US and I have to say that I'm leaning towards Japanese developers (only because of Sonic). But America can develop some awesome games too. It just seems that each side focuses more or less on different aspects to a video game. American made games seem to focus a lot more on killing aliens/people where as Japanese made games seem to have more based on story.

No, the most important element to a video game is just gameplay. What makes most games suck is the fact they focus to heavily on a story and not on gameplay. Story/plot can be taken out of a game all together and the game will still be awesome. Have a great story/plot but horrible gameplay you have a bad game.
