Last-Gen Console Discussions (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii)

Too be fair, the xbox was mean to be a learning experience for MS, and it was. They've learned from their errors, in a big way.

Financially maybe.

It was also a case of "Look, I have all the money in the world. I don't necessarily care about gaming output, I just wanna show that I can win."

No point, actual none.

with the specs of the PS3, the trailer i saw wasn't the game graphics. PS3 couldn't handle the game smoothly with that kind of speed/memory

You sound confident when you say that. So how was he able to pause the demo and move the camera? Surely you can't do that in a normal cutscene?

You have to remember this was MS's first console. They may not have made as big a splash as Sony, but they've certainly got their foot in the door. Now with the 360 out and looking good, MS seems to have gotten the kinks worked out.

they learned from their errors and happen to have nearly 5 million copies of xbox360 already sold. they made miracles 😛

I think MS rushed the Xbox. PSX was Sony's first console yet they killed with it.

I watched a trailer for Metal Gear Solid about an hour ago, and it seemed like it could have been in game footage

Sony's success with the PSX can also be partly attributed to Nintendo's refusal to use CD's and stay with the inferior cartridge based games. Which directly caused them to lose FF7 and some other games.

Oh and I saw some Ninteno mario like family fun games coming out for 360, like they expanded eek

Nope this one was from November. Same graphics though.

Sure, but Nintendo made the intentional decision to choose cartridges, and Sony went for CD's; it's obvious now who was right in their choice, but Sony couldn't have been sure that Cd's would stick for video game purposes. For all they knew, they could have been way ahead of their time.

Not to the massive degree that Microsoft did. This wasn't a steady price drop. It was a massive decrease. Gates even said it himself, though I honestly can't remember where I saw the vid interview now.

Massive? Prolly...but it was a competitive drop...

Xbox:

11/15/2001 (lauch date) $299.99
5/15/2002 $199.99
5/14/2003 $179.99

PS2:

10/26/2000 (launch date) $299.99
5/14/2002 $222.99
5/14/2003 199.99

yeah i just realized the website i went to made an error in the link or something i guess. I went to IGN, and watched a trailer on Assassins creed and realized it's the exact same.So I looked for a trailer on MGS4 and saw the newest one. I believe those are game graphics....looks same as some other games I've seen. Watch assassins creed and you'll see what I was arguing about lol.

There was no reason to think that CD's wouldn't stick.

They were cheap to make, and easier to design for which caused many third party supporters to actively support the PS. This is why MGS and FFVII both came out for the PSX rather than the N64.

They also held more information.

The only thing cartridge based games had over CD's is lack of load times.

I've seen assassins creed and it looks good too.

I'm off anyway for the night

Not here it wasn't.

As I said. I didn't get my Xbox with anything major. Just a game and extra controller and it cost me £400 or around that. So to see it months later for £250 with 4 games was quite a massive drop. Not too competitive, unless you mean in an attempt to shift numbers. Which I never denied.

so you got screwed over by microsofts marketing decision, ended up paying too much, and thus will forever be bitter toward them. well if thats the case i think you're absolutely justified. however that is a reflection on their marketing strategies which have always been....well....retarded.

but that does not reflect on the system, which (eventually) delivered on every promise in every aspect of gameplay.

I don't remember any promises MS made about Xbox other than that it would have games available, and maybe have a grand online gaming system, which it did.
