As said before, the more negative press the better. Sony will fold whether it likes it or not. The laws of economics are more powerful than executive corporate decisions.

It doesn't already take 5-6 years to make a game? *looks 'squarely' at Square-Enix. "Ya know, I was still in middle school when FFX came out.....I'm almost done with college....and FFXII is STILL not out yet!"*

Technology evolves with the system. In the beginning it will take a reputable amount of time to make such a game, but when technology evolves (and it will), the production time to make such a game will substantially decrease. Sony seems to be taking a futurist approach to their system. Which is why they have a ridiculous load of new technology. The other corporations, for better or for worse, are taking a more practical path for the present.

My main concern is that Wii and Xbox360 also strive to make innovation and further technology use for games in the gaming industry.

The Wii has a very innovative gameplay mechanic but not much else is improved in terms of technology. One major worry I have as touched on with IGN is that they're going create cute, gimmicky games that have near zero cost and will sell for millions. You would play a glorified whack a mole with the Wii controller. If this turns out to be largely and incredibly successful, it may have a detrimental impact on the gaming market. Gaming industries will realize that "hey, Nintendo just realeased a game where the object is to wack a Pikachu with your controller...they made millions! Let's do the same!" I'm afraid gaming firms will abandon great graphics, intense gameplay and other next-generation modules for arcade games that cost alot less to make but are very profitable. It would make us hit a threshold.

I sincerely hope Nintendo doesn't go that route. Some of their games like Metroid and Zelda look 'revolutionary' in terms of gameplay. Others look just plain gimmicky and serve as a novelty.

The Xbox360 seems to be expanding on online features but has taken the middle "safe" road of not adding much new except greater online functions.

The PS3 is a tossup. It's a great risk. It may be ahead of its time. And it's using technology nobody really understands that well. They almost seem to be making a capital product than a consumer product. And that may be their swing or miss.

There already thousands of pre-orders. ($190?!) so it's not likely to fail like everyone thinks it may. I'll get one too...and everyone else is likely to get one too..eventually. Everyone's gonna groan and moan about the price. But when they see the onslaught of exclusive third-party games like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear and Kingdom Hearts that made the previous two machines so popular, they're likely to fold and buy one.

It won't sell well initially in comparision to the Wii or Xbox due the high price and lack of games in the first year. But when the ball starts rolling and large supplies and low demand drives the price down, the PS3 will quickly gain momentum.

I've heard alot of people say they're going to buy the system just for Metal Gear 4....

The Ipod is a good example. It's very expensive. It cost nearly as much as the PS3 in some countries. And yet everyone buys one. Even with cheaper players with more battery life and more features around for half the price. Sony's definitely taking the "Apple" route by touting it's system as more "advanced" and "hip" than the other systems.

Nintendo can certainly beat them at their own game though, particularly with their design.

Well some games do like Half Life 2, but the majority of console games dont take more than 2-3 years at the most, but if every game released on an console is going to take 5-6 years atleast (barring none setbacks) and costing over 35-40 million per game, how will this effect more original games? Or will we be seeing the umptenth sequel?

I understand that it will get shorter, but how long will that take? Will it sacriface be the really small amount of games during the first-second year? Could those games eat in the XBOX's 360's established base?

I do agree with you on the Wii, it could turn out to be very gimmicky, but if it doesnt, that is seriously bad news for PS3.

What's so new with PS3? They'res nothing except for better visuals.

But the price is soo much more compared to other systems. It's' not an extra few bucks, it's an extra 200 bucks, and Im not even going to include the cost of HDTV that people rarely have.

The PS3 will do well, but I dont think its going to outsell the XBOX 360. The year difference is going to be huge, similiar to what the PS2 did to the original XBOX. XBOX 360 will have a bunch of triple AAA titles coming out in the winter that will seriously affect the PS3. The same thing happened to the original XBOX. Lastly, the PS3 doesnt have that many exclusive titles anymore. They lost GTA, Resident Evil isnt a PS3 exclusive title, and Final Fantasy will be released on the 360 and Kingdom Hearts will be released 8 years from now.

You cant compare the music business to the game business. The casual game player, the key demographic for Sony for the past 2 generations will not want to buy an PS3 on where they're is no games for the next year, it cost $200 dollars more, and you need an HDTV to make it work. That's alot to ask somebody to do, especially considering the XBOX has an established game list, and its $200 less.

Is it true that Playstation 3 is high definition and also don't you need a high definition tv if the PS3 has high definition?

It is. If I'm not mistaken, it uses HDMI hookups, which are the second best quality hookups.
I dont know if you need an HDTV to play the PS3, I wouldnt think so, but whats the point of paying 700 bucks (canadian plus tax) for a system that only works well in HD.

The HD question has the same answer as the same question for the 360.

You CANNOT take advantage of HD output without an HD TV. It doesn't matter what hookups there are, the average TV will not be able to display such signals as HD. You can play it, but it will not look as good, and may end up looking worse than a non-HD output.

Yeah, but the XBOX 360 isnt 700 something bucks.

The idea being for XBOX360 and PS3 is that you need an HDTV to get the most out of the system.

When I buy my XBOX360 all Im going to do is connect it to my PC monitor which has HDTV abilities.

i'd hate to imagine what the PS3's gonna cost down there then x-x

lol...i would too

This may be a little off topic but I dont want to open a thread just for something small so here we go...

Well I have some good news.. Im getting an XBOX360 this week!

I have a concern tho:

1) Overheating: I know this happened right after launch and I just want to know if anyone has heard or experiecned any recent problems? Ive been reading and doing some research on this and no new problems have risen so I can only assume that Microsoft has corrected these problems. This seems to be the only major concern for me.

2) What game should I get with it? G.R.A.W. looks like my choice but maybe someone can mention another one.

gears of war if its out, otherwise no suggestions from me...

I never had an issue with overheating, but a couple of these "stories" could be a result of a few lemons, or a result of people being idiots by accidently covering the vents, or keeping it on a thick wool rug or near a heating vent.

I just got the insurance from EB when I bought it, just in case I got an lemon.

GRAW is damn good if you like those types of games. Oblivion is another great one.

I would definitly give Condemened and Prey an rental, they're pretty damn good games, but not long enough to warrent a purchase.

Dead Rising is out next week, and it looks to be a pretty darn good game too.

Ya Im going to buy mines from Best Buy and I plan on getting the service plan just incase anything happens.

hey Smasandian, what about the disc's being scratched? I remember something a while back about not putting the XBOX360 vertically but instead horizontally. Does that really help? Also do you have an external cooling kit?

Thanks for the advice guys.

Mine is vertical, I dont have problems either.

But when you get the console, they're is tape that says to not move it when a disc is in the system. But, that's pretty much like any other cd/dvd player out.

I dont have an extra cooler kit. Occasionally, I get disc read problems, but its rarely an problem. If you have a computer and you play games on it, the amount of problems are roughly the same.

I rarely have any PC problems, the only time was when my video drivers were out of date, I had forgotten to check up on that. So I guess Microsoft did fix their problems after all.

One last question, when did you purchase your XBOX360 Smasandian?

Umm near Easter.

But that's what I meant on how PC games sometimes just go right to the desktop. That was rarely happens with mine XBOX 360

Mine is also vertical and it doesn't result in any problems I don't also have when it's horizontal. Just sometimes, like Smas, a disc read error, but that's pretty standard.

Mines never overheated either, but buying an intercooler could do no harm, really. I still should get one.

As for games, GRAW and Oblivion are the two best, I think. If you're a racing game fan, Burnout or PGR3 are both worthy of a purchase. If you like FPS games, try out Prey and Call of Duty 2. If you like fighting games, DOA4 is good.

Harrison speaks more on PS3....Uhhh???? PS4? 😑 🤨

Sony's Phil Harrison hints at disc-free future for consoles
Paul Loughrey 17:52 07/08/2006

"I'd be amazed if the PS4 had a physical disc drive"

With just months to go before the launch of the PS3 and the debut of Sony's costly Blu-ray format, worldwide studios president Phil Harrison has hinted that the console's successor will not feature a disc drive.

In a recent interview with Wired Magazine, Harrison speculated that the successor to the PlayStation 3 may be entirely based on digital distribution models for both games and media content.

"We have to change the business model. We have to find a new way to reach the consumer," he stated.

Harrison went on to refer to Kart Rider, a Korean game which is offered for free. Consumers are then charged for upgrades enhancements via digital download - and more than 12 million people are currently playing the game.

"That will be the business model for the future of games," Harrison declared, before stating: "I'd be amazed if the PS4 had a physical disc drive."

Clearly, when taken in context, Harrison's comments are merely speculative. However, it could be inferred that the company's vision of the future is focused very much on online distribution, rather than with the "future proof" Blu-ray disc format.

Sony is set to launch the PlayStation 3 in November and has gone to great lengths to assure consumers that Blu-ray - which is in direct competition with the Microsoft-backed HD-DVD format - will be the dominant format for media storage, using the costly format as justification for the PS3's high price tag.
