I agree with you Mist.I also thought Saw I overall was better than the sequel.Saw II in a way was basically MTV's Real World from hell.
I actually had a problem with the first deathtrap at the beginning of Saw II.After my first viewing,I assumed the guy couldn't raise his arms to try to shield the front and back of his head since I thought the deathmask had shoulder pads to prevent him from doing so.But after my second viewing I noticed there weren't any shoulder pads, the deathmask was just an oversized neckbrace. So I thought it would've been way more realistic if the guy had tried to shield his head before the deathmask clamped down.
But instead we just got him screaming and freaking out with lots of fast and visceral editing. If the guy shielded his head, would he have still died? Most likely.Hell,it's possible the clamp might've had enough force to chop his arms off.But again,it would've been realistic if he had tried. And the more realism a horror movie strives for,the greater overall effect.
But regardless of all the issues the movie has,I still think Saw II was pretty good.Just not nearly as good as Saw I.Oh yeah,I think the overall stupidity in the group could possibly be connected to the poison they were all inhaling, and therefore might've impaired their judgement.(and then throw in some panic, desperation, etc.) The girl who put both arms into the box did seem out of it.But the furnace part WAS just plain freakin' STUPID.
