?
Thrash Metal stemmed off from that, but was hugely influenced by hardcore punk resulting in a faster, more aggressive sound. Important Thrash metal bands are Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax.

It doesn't matter what Wikipedia tells you. Mathcore and grindcore are useless. Just like folkmetal, vikingmetal and battle metal. Basically everything ranging from TDEP to Iron Maiden can be considered metal. There are certain subgenres that I have no problem with, because they actually make sense. Like Black metal, Death Metal, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Power Metal or Industrial Metal.
I don't use wikipedia to get a list of subgenres of music. I could have just went there and wrote them.
Most of the terms I learnt through heavy metal magazine Metal Hammer or bands official websites and by being a fan.
Whether or not we like the terms they exist and are used to label/categorise bands.
Battlemetal/folkmetal and Viking metal aren't useless terms. Some bands fit into all three terms, Turisas for example. I can't really think of another genre they fit into

I honestly do not understand the metal fan's endless obsession with specifying every single band to some new ridiculously named genre, which basically amounts to the same thing they labelled that other band as.

I'm not making anything up.You can hardly deny that whenever you're on here, and you talk about having went to some gig, having heard a new album or having discovered a new band, it's usually a metal gig, album or band.
I don't list everything I see, hear and buy on KMC
Bye anyway

How about just using metal?
Why? Does it really bother you to have obscure sub-genres?
sub-genres serve their purpose. Say I didn't like heavy metal but I heard Turisas and I loved them, I'd like to find other bands that played the same type of music with similar instruments used (think they have a violinist and accordian player)
