What's the biggest idea you're going for musically on this new record?
You know, mostly, I really like ****ing with arrangements, and I always try to look at the possibilities of how you write power-pop music. You know, it's like, how do you take something--and it could be anything from the Creation and the Who to the Beatles to Cheap Trick to the Jam--and try to expand on the idea of what is supposed to be three-chord mayhem? And how do you do it in a way where the arrangements are just unpredictable? So I'm pushing myself to be progressive in songwriting and being a songwriter. I come from a culture where I'm into great albums, and I still believe in that. I'm not saying I can go for it this hard every time--there might be times when I want to have something that's a little bit more spontaneous and off the cuff--but with this record, the feeling's been that you've got to just go for it.

Just for the record, I like none of the bands mentioned in the discussion.I just like Blink 182 more because they still don't take themselves seriously, where Green Day have been trying to pass themselves off as some Springsteenian rock-act for the last couple of years.
ill find it

And Tool don't do that?Tool and Beck and stuff even make words up (Beck put all of his made up words into a 'Becktionary' of course), and it works
Not that hard, eh?

I dislike their music because it's basically a rock version of Coldplay. Simple and boring. Their attitudes is what makes me hate the band though.
And other songs like Hitchin' A Ride are written and played in a way that most 'popular' bands wouldn't do, and use techniques uncommon in that kind of music.
Not many other bands these days utilise their bass player so effectively, either.
