"McCain To Speak At SC Abstinence Event" by the Associated PressColumbia, SC
—Most presidential hopefuls are trying to get people to say "yes," but Sen. John McCain plans to urge a crowd in Spartanburg this weekend to say "no."The Arizona Republican is to speak Sunday night to about 1,500 middle and high school students about abstaining from premarital sex. Abstinence and abortion still loom as issues in this first-in-the-South primary state in the heart of the Bible Belt.
The event is to follow McCain's appearance at a hot dog and ice cream social.
McCain has had to make up ground with some Christian conservatives after a recent rebuke from Christian leader James Dobson, who said he wouldn't support the Republican's presidential bid. Conservatives question McCain's opposition to a federal amendment to ban gay marriage. He opposes same-sex marriage, but says it should be regulated by the states.
The senator is trying hard to avoid a repeat of the 2000 Republican presidential primaries in which now-President George W. Bush mobilized Christian conservative activists to ultimately sink McCain's campaign. Prominent Christian leaders opposed McCain in 2000, partly because they did not feel he was conservative enough on their issues.
Alexia Newman, who runs the Carolina Pregnancy Center, said her student rally is costing about $22,000. McCain isn't putting money into the event, but "if he wants to support this rally, that'd be great," Newman said.
"We're excited he would want to come and endorse what we're doing," she said. "It's going to be a high-energy night."
