Thor's based on the Norse God Of Thunder but that's it. His personality, physical appearance, and history vary greatly from the myths. The same goes for most of the other inhabitants of Asgard.
Trying to excuse Fraction's Thor being completely out of character based on what's come before by pointing out he's based on the myth version doesn't work.

Out of character for a Norse Thunder God? I say thee NAY!

You know, you guys are disagreeing with zopzop over Thor, but Factions Thor is much closer to the mythic Thor than the one that you are accustomed to reading...
Lets see where he takes Thor; I personally would like to see a Thunder God that holds back less, has more attitude, and is much more willing to kill than the Thor we are used to seeing...

Unfortunately this is something that all fans of a particular character have to face at some point. I recall an interview where Dan Abnett was asked if he was worried that some new writer would come along and disregard what he and Andy had done with Nova and form a completely different take on the character. His response was that he -I'm paraphrasing here- "doesn't lose a wink of sleep over it because no writer is ever under any obligation to depict a character exactly the same as his predecessors, or should ever be a slave to it's fans. The only character in comicdom that's close to immutable is Superman. Most everyone else is fair game to change as the storyline dictates".
Now in fairness he also said that he personally tries not to mess with the essence of a character too much out of respect for longtime fans etc, but he'd never begrudge a writer if he choose to do so.
I'm not particularly a Thor fan so I'm not as sensitive to the character changes, but I can sympathize. Lord knows I'd hate for Rich to be depicted as a dumb meat head type again, or as a rookie chump desperate to make the big time as in the New Warriors years. Dude is well past that now.
Marvel wants people who watched and enjoyed the movie to be able to pick up a comic and feel like they are reading extended adventures about the same character. It isn't a mistake that Bendis and Fractions Thor's are similar to each other but different from the majority of canon before. It is almost assuredly a conscious decision from the Marvel editorial staff to have a bridge between the movie and the comics.
Not really a great mystery.

Hmm. I haven't watched the flick yet, but that very well could be.

Yeah...this is pretty much it. I can't believe no one picked up on this. He even grew his beard out to resemble the Thor from the movie.
I like it to be honest.
They even changed Thor physical makeup to resemble the movie Thor.

I don't see it.
Fractions' Thor and Movie Thor don't seem similar to me at all.
