Agreed on Starman being awesome. Robinson really made me love Shade more than I thought I would.
As for the Whedon/Bendis comparison, I disagree. The difference in quality being directly related to Whedon understanding theme, medium as a metaphor, and characterization. His characters don't necessarily serve as mouthpieces for him, but for the message he wants to convey, although I guess you could argue the message is an extension of what he thinks or whatever but that's literature for you.
Bendis doesn't understand characters. When is the last time Carol said anything?
