Superman is always charged. When Superman uses energy to fly or run or whatever, the sun is always topping up his charge, like a sink overflowing with the tap on.
It's only when the sun is out of view that he's forced to rely on his actual charge which, depending on what comic you read, can last anywhere from days, to weeks, and even to months, depending on what he's actually doing at the time.
As for the "solar energy being knocked out of him" part, I've written my response five times in this post, and yet I keep deleting it because I can't phrase It how I would ideally like to.
