It's like that scene where Superman launched a punch at Prankster, Prankster dodged, and the punch then swung back into Superman's face and he knocked himself out cold. Why would Superman launch a punch so powerful that it could knock out even Superman at a dweeby little guy with no powers? If it connected it would have turned Prankster's head to paste.

They fought beforehand. Cho had his Bannershield up. Thor knew about them as one of his lightning bolts disabled the shield the first time around. Hence Thor trying to do so again (as Amadeus points out).

Well there's at least some sort of logic as to why Thor fired off a powerful shot.
