They actually dealt with this in the arc. He recognized that she is older, but it was that it was his life as Spider-Man put her in the situation. They made it clear that if she had been dying of natural causes, he wouldn't have made the same decision.

It was a dumb arc; I agree there. But I prefer criticism for the right reasons.
