probably for two reasons.
1. He's come to rely on the powers of the hammer too much and not on his own skill.
2. Bad writing. I guess it's hard to properly write a character that's thousands of years old with millions of fights under his belt, who's a master of pretty much every mortal weapon, who is the son of (and in the future will be) a skyfather, who has taken on celestials and ancient eldritchian god demons.
Honestly, Thor should be written like a mixture of Ares, The Eternal Warrior, and Kharn the betrayer. He should have more to offer a team than "I'll hit it with my hammer". He should be able to immediately recognize a flaw in a plan and should constantly reference how "X" plan has worked or failed "Y" character in the past while simultaneously predicting what will happen next and he should beat his enemies with equal parts skill and grit.
