BTW: @ Sin, I went to SDCC a couple summers ago, and I'm planning on going with a number of friends this year as well.
It's definitely worth it, and dressing up is probably half of the fun. And yeah... you'll probably feel like a bit of a piece of meat even if you're a dude (not the overweight/ugly kind though). I thought it was a nice ego kick but then again, I'm sure being a girl, you get that kind of reassurance all the time.
I would say do it though, cons are kinda weird to go to when you're in street clothes. Definitely makes you feel like an outsider. 😬

Most of the cosplayers at the cons I've been too are lame weebos dressed as the current anime flavour of the week, or steam punk kids. Good comic character cosplays are few and far between, up here in Canada at least.

Best cosplayer I've ever seen was some trippy older due who looked just like Stephen Strange. Had the Eye of Agamotto the Cloak of Levitation, pretty much everything. He was also high out of his damn mind, which was awesome. lol

I always like the movie quality Predator cosplayers. You usually get at least one at every major con.
