Iranian President Calls for the Destruction of Israel

Iran plans Holocaust conference

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iran, whose president has labeled the attempt by Nazi Germany to exterminate Jews during World War II a "myth" and called for the destruction of Israel, announced Sunday it will hold a conference on the Holocaust.

"There will be a conference that will research the topic of the Holocaust and all its dimensions in the future," according to a statement on the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

The statement did not say when the meeting would take place or who would be involved but said it would be sponsored by Iran's Foreign Ministry and the Organization of the Islamic Conference "and in consultation with other countries to pursue this issue."

Last month, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a speech, "They have invented a myth that Jews were massacred, and place this above God, religions and the prophets."

He added, "The West has given more significance to the myth of the genocide of the Jews."

He argued that the "myth" of the Holocaust served as Europe's pretext for the existence of Israel.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, President Bush, and many European officials condemned the remarks. Israeli officials also said Iran was ignoring the biblical Jewish homeland and thousands of years of Jewish history.

Ahmadinejad's remarks about the Holocaust and calls for the destruction of Israel play out in the showdown over his nation's nuclear intentions.

U.S. and European officials have expressed concern that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon under the guise of restarting its nuclear reactors for peaceful energy purposes. Tehran insists it has the right to build nuclear fuel.

Britain, France and Germany -- the so-called EU-3, which conducted failed negotiations with Iran -- along with the United States want the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, to turn the issue over to the U.N. Security Council.

"The current president of Iran has announced that the destruction of Israel is an important part of their agenda, and that's unacceptable," President Bush said Friday at the White House, at an appearance with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"And the development of a nuclear weapon, it seems like to me, would make him a step closer to achieving that objective."

Iran claims that their nuclear program is meant solely for energy purposes, but I believe it’s becoming more and more apparent that this is not their intent. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is making numerous radical claims, and the world community is growing uneasy on him and his country’s agenda.

I honestly believe that a war with Iran is becoming inevitable. Your thoughts?

I think Iran has every right to have an nuclear energy program. The comments are rahter ignorant. But no reason for a war. So I'd say its not necessary. And especially a pre-emptive strike would be unjust.

This Conference should be interesting. (Freedom of Speech.)

Iran does not yet posess these weapons ; the more of these comments they make, the deeper the hole and the less chance of obtaining materials they will have.

I cannot see why they dont STFU, build the nukes and then make threats when they have weapons. They are not making any sense with this sort of international furore strategy........unless of course they have the fuel for the atomic bombs.

It won't be a "war" with Iran either way will it? They're Iran.

I think he eant Iran is not actually an opponent the UN has to be scared of.

Not so much scared of, but it won't be a war will it?

A war is when two or more armies are fighting. Not when one goes in and systematically takes out the other at will. Which is what could quite easily happen.

Then I'd have to laugh at him, wouldn't you think so?

I see...well if the Iran has Atomic Weapons it culd be more interesting.

I'm not interested in seeing a war, I'm just saying that if the US wanted to get rid of Iran, they could. If Iran wanted the same, they couldn't do it. The simply do not have the power or resources.

Hence why they've never been a "threat" at all till they have nukes.

even if they had nukes, I doubt they would use them on the U.S.

this situation is similar to the one w/ North Korea. We knew they wouldn't use their nukes on us; it was more like a cry for help. They wanted attention, and they knew they wouldn't get it unless they made nuclear threats.

I think Iran is a slightly different situation, but still no real threat to the U.S. If they used their nukes on anyone, it would probably be Israel, but Israel has nukes too so even using them on Israel would be a risky move for Iran.

I think the real danger is Iran giving terrorists access to their nuclear arsenal. If we don't know who is setting off the nukes, we don't know where to strike back.

I agree 100% with the last part.

Iran have never been a threat and I believe that, tired of being overlooked, they just wanted to be a name that gets dropped.

Yep, no reason to go to war with Iran..they are just calling for the destruction of another country. 🙄

Think about what you just said, I mean the REAL dynamics of that comment, then maybe you'll understand why I'm laughing at you.

-AC

when you really look at it, the Iranian president is a loon with little real power

That's it in a nutshell (pun intended).
The leadership of Iran is of immature, delusional self-aggrandizing mind (um, that is, more than with other countries). To permit this kind of mentality to develop nuclear technology without strict supervision (or they face the consequences) is short-sighted, cowardly and irresponsible on the part of the (more) civilized world.
