Blood. It's nature's lube
I saw Hostel tonight, and i gotta say, it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting, in fact, I thought it was pretty solid for what it was. A campy, gorey horror movie that had a huge heart but not enough talent from Eli Roth to fulfill the desires I'm sure he had in his head.
This movie, much like Cabin Fever, had an awkward use of humor. There were some moments where the humor just didn't flow, and took me out of the horror at key moments. I liked how he had the beginning of the movie very light hearted, in theory. But again, the execution didn't do the idea justice. It dove into horror too suddenly, and since I know he was trying to do an Audition style progression into horror, which was very slow and gradual, it just didn't click.
The gore was pretty solid aside from the eyball thing, which was just silly and looked overly fake. Though, much of the gore was a novelty, done just for the sake of having 'gross stuff'. It was a full theater when I went, lots of teens, and they all laughed and got a kick out of the gore, which shows that it wasn't great use of violence, especially when the goal of the film was to be disturbing and visceral, not a light hearted Final Destination type movie that used the violence for shits and giggles.
I'd say it was a decent horror movie, but not at all the horrific disturbing experience that the advertisements make it out to be. Eli Roth's heart was in the right place, and it was an improvement over Cabin Fever, and I think the guy does have some promise. He's a guy who loves horror films, it's obvious from watching the film, and I think at some point he may realize his full potential. But the most important thing for him is to learn how and when to use humor, so it doesn't take the viewer out of the dark atmosphere.
