I'm so glad that Cyclops is not out-of character, and he has a consistent portrayal throughout his latest appearances, in line with most of his history. This way, nothing seems forced.😐
He may have been the "lawful good Paladin" or "boyscout" of the X-Men, and even though he always seemed a little stiff and boring, it was nonetheless ok. He was what Xavier taught him to be and what the X-Men needed and his then girlfriend/wife complemented this appearance perfectly.
But times changed ... drastically!
He lost several wives several times, sometimes due to his own fault. He lost his son, he fused with Apoc, he learned that his "surrogate father" and lifelong mentor was not at all the wise and noble man he thought he was, he witnessed the near extinction of his race. These are all traumatizing experiences on a personal level, which would not leave ANY human being unchanged.
Fact is, that with all that has happened to him, he would have to question his teaching and his way of handling things. Though i don't like to lean on "The Dark Night", i do nonetheless: The old Cyclops may have been the leader the X-Men deserved, but he is obviously not the leader they need right now, and with all things happened to him, not the leader he can be any longer. Add to all that the fact that he's in love and in a stable relationship with Emma Frost, it's absolutely no wonder he became more offensive, determined, sardonic and sometimes even cruel.
If anything, his recent behavioural changements were not at all forced, but long overdue, not because i like the "new" Scot more, which i do not, but because on a psychological level i find them logically consistent.
There's a difference between a character evolving, from point A to point B due to certain experiences which is a natural progress, and acting completly out of character from one story to another, a 'forced-to-be-badass' type of behaviour to try and make people say 'how cool iz that !!1'.
Mis-characterizations isn't something new in Marvel though, so nothing surprising here.

I agree. It's the natural progression of his character based on the circumstances surrounding mutants in the last couple of years. There is a new status quo for mutants, and being the figure head for not only the X-Men but entire mutant species Cyclops had to evolve as a character. He can't afford to be the naive, idealistic "boy scout" his been in the past, he can't afford to be Superman in cool sun glasses, the situation called for him to step up and take charge or step down at let someone who was willing what needed to be done take over... and he chose to step up. He is responsible for the survival of the mutant species, he doesn't have the luxury to be the man he was when he first joined the X-Men. Mutants are at war, their very survival is on the line, the X-Men are soldiers now and Cyclops is their general.
