don't you hate the need for smilies? I use them, but only when I feel it's absolutely needed. However, I also accept the blame when it comes to people misunderstanding your point due to the lack of their use. It's a double-edged sword. (*nods to PVS as the inspiration for this response)
Ultimately, it's a sorrowful story of men lucky enough to connect but forlornly unable to fulfill their characters and live according to their true natures. Unfortunately, the film hits this same note far too often in the latter going; the point is made well before the yarn plays itself out and, like virtually every Lee picture, this one is too long for its own good.

Ang Lee is not a homosexual. Perhaps he made it because it addresses a segement of the polulation that does not experience equal rights? His motivation is up to him, personally. Good story telling, etc. But his desisions are up to him. I've not seen the movie. Nor do I intend to. Step outside of that box in which you live and the answer may become apparent.

Because the story and characters are outstanding. He said he read the original short story and it haunted him for a long time, it stayed with him, thus he wanted to make it into a movie. And a great movie it is.
Also, so any filmmaker who makes a film is creating something from their real life, right? Is Wes Craven a serial killer? He's made films about the subject matter, so by your logic he must be a murderer.
