What are the laws regarding self defense in your country?

Over here, if a burglar breaks into your home, trips over your coffee table and breaks his leg, he can sue the owner of the house for damages!

If you wake to find a robber in your house, and you hit them, with, say, a lamp shade, the robber can sue you for assult.

Does this sort of thing happen where you are? Can people defend themselves and their property without being sued? Because it seems that you are better off letting a robber burgle your house, because if you get involved and try to protect your property, you end up in jail.

I remember a story about a teenage boy, drunk one night, got kicked out of a bar for being rowdy. He climbed up the drainpipe of the bramans house at night, the barmen didn't know who he was, thought he was some guy there to kill him, and hit him with a baseball bat.
The kid sued him, saying the barman had no right to hit him, and he won. The poor barman had to pay about $50,000 to this brat.

So what are the laws in your country regarding self defense, and defense of property?

I hear you can get arrested for slamming your car door, in New Zealand. 😐

In TX and LA you can use lethal force against people who are trespassing on your property at night. AZ used to have that law as well.

Wish we had that law, our laws protect the criminals more than the victims.

here you can decapitate him with a katana as long as you can justify you used proper restraint and self defense.

There is none, thats just it. You can't defend yourself at all. Soon enough, a woman won't be able to defend herself against a rapist.

my elementary school: if you are being attacked, blocking the blows is "escalating the conflict" which is why i was suspended 4 times in one year.

eh. I was about to say....then again some people have wierd laws. I know that in this one country (sorry dont remember the name, but they beat an american for doing something ordinary over here, but it got him a beating over there) you cant even chew gum. You get wacked by those freakin sticks of theres....it might be singapore, Im not entirely sure.

any school board member that votes yes on zero tolerance laws needs a penis in the eye.

pretty much expulsion for anything. pointing a finger and saying bang. writing a scary story for a school assignment, farting in a manner that sounds like a machine gun...
