That old guy has been following the law for years and he is still considered a legal alien and not a citizen. Hence the word "legal"...
There are hundreds of thousands maybe millions like him here in the US that have been contributing to this country for years and are still not considered US citizens, but considered legal aliens. They should have first crack at becoming citizens of the United States. Not the 12 million illegal immigrants that are here illegally.

I'm friends with several legal immigrants (like your French colleauge), and all have bemoaned how difficult it is to get a green card, etc. Nevertheless, that is the case with all industrialized nations. In fact, it's easier to get into this country legally than, say, the UK. The US allows 1 million people to immigrate each year. That's a lot of people. So it's not so much a problem with supply, but rather with demand. That makes me proud to be American, for sure. Most Americans, including me, don't have problems with immigrants, since so many of us are descendents of them. That is why I feel many journalists are being disingenuous when they say groups/people are "anti-immigrant" with regard to illegal Mexican immigrants.What people, including myself, fear about Mexican illegal immigration is that there is no control over how many are coming in, there is no certainty about the long-term implications, and there doesn't seem to be much melting as there was in previous generations. If anything, there is reinforcement of Mexican identity by the sheer volume of people continually entering. It doesn't take much in the way of mental gymnastics to realize this will have profound cultural implications

I just keep laughing at the "long term implecations" paragraph. As if this just started happening over night.
Reason why they protest is because out of no where a senator comes up with a crazy idea of making immagrants criminals. When in fact people come to the US to work their asses off for what they think is a great salary of $5/hr.
I still cant see why Americans are affected somehow and no one on KMC has mentioned any real problems as to why immigrants should not be allowed to stay if they enter illigally. Take Floridas laws for example, as soon as a Cuban touches Florida land, they are not allowed to be deported. So explain to me why immigrants should be booted when they grow your food, serv you your dinner, build your homes.
LOL everytime a tax dollar is spent the Govt is now limited in how it can spend resources to further my life ie Social Security, security etc. Everytime an illegal crosses the border and has a child in the USA the child is a citizen and it becomes a cost to the USA. Who pays for that the citizens, did the illegals contribute, no!
Rising costs of healthcare, there are a great many factors but once again emergency room visits and no payment translates to the cost rising to all the consumers who do pay! Employeers not paying tax's when empolying illegals which further detracts from USA tax dollars.
Now more importantly tell me how there illegal immigrants benefit ME.

rising costs of healthcare and the impending doom of social security are more directly caused by people simply living far longer and in greater numbers than the system can support.
the baby boomers are what will kill social security, just by....living. 😬 but "dem damn foreigners" make a convenient scapegoat, dont they?
