and the people that buy them think they're good.. this more than shows that theres no real global goodness.. someone, somewhere is going to think that they suck

Are you willing to argue the connection between sales meaning quality for those? I somehow doubt that. In this case, you think it's a good game, so do many, but it's sales do not mean that it sold BECAUSE it's good.

Let's be fair, Halo is the most hyped game of all time. It's The Beatles of games, celebrities showed up at it's release simply because it was a big deal.
Originally posted by Alpha Centaurilike I said.. IMO theres no such thing as SOLELY good.. because then everyone would have to like it
No, it sells, and happens to be a good game to many. It's not necessarily selling because it's good, SOLELY.

Grand Theft Auto? Hardly. Halo? Hardly. These are all BIG selling games that I think happen to be quite shit, and I'm not alone. Outnumbered? Maybe. Alone? Certainly not.
You are suggesting it being a big seller means it's a good game, it doesn't. It still doesn't answer my question though. There is no indefinite link between quality and sales, so why does any ONE fan seem excited by the possibility of sales?
I couldn't care less if Gears sold well or not, if it was the same game, I'd still love it. I'D have a copy, that's what matters to me. Couldn't care less who else buys one. If anything, mass sales simply means less chance for advancement. Look at God of War, look at...Halo, look at Devil May Cry 4. You have to be pretty damn special to ignore the hype and try for something better, these companies usually don't.

gears has sold quite well.. so there really cant be any if's about it.. I played it at my friends house and was captivated by it almost instantly.. I bought a 360 purely for gears of war, and didn't care if I liked anything else on the system
sales is a double edged sword.. they could either take the series in a new direction.. or do the tried and true crap over and over.. some people actually get pissed off when they change things in future incarnations making it harder to decide between fanbase or potential newcomers (though I cant see why they wouldnt want new things).
ignoring the hype as a company probably costs extra money to develop new engines, hire people to come up with new ideas.. spend time coding and balancing them.. thats just part of the reason why people get lazy and add nothing new
as for not being alone in thinking these things are shitty..well.. it seems its all coming down to your opinion (and the people who share it).. are you telling me that only games and music you like are solely good?... sounds a bit unfair to me

I know I surely don't run around buying shit on a whim.. I make sure I think its good first
So then we can't use sales a barometer for what's good and bad, since it's never going to be definitely good or definitely bad.
My point is, how many copies something sells does not DICTATE quality, just how many people believe there's quality there, which is opinion.

I disagree, I think it's subpar and boring.

Of course, taste is entirely subjective. As I said:
"How many copies something sells does not DICTATE quality, just how many people believe there's quality there, which is opinion.".

No, taste is entirely subjective, but that is what I'm saying. Sales do not reflect quality, they reflect OPINION on what quality is, and sometimes not even that. You have to BUY something first to DECIDE if you like it. I BOUGHT a copy of Halo with my original Xbox, my number counts towards copies sold, as do many who bought it, like me, and hated it. So you simply cannot say "It sold this many, that means good things.", it's a dumb assumption.
The reason games companies do not change is because they know that if they keep pumping out the same bs, people will idiotically put the cart before the horse and DECIDE what they'll like before buying. Eg: Halo 3, God of War...3, Devil May Cry 4.

Did you even read anything I just said?
Not all of those 3 million are people who loved it or even liked.
Sales just show how many bought it. I don't use sales as a quality barometer, because they aren't.

how many of 3 million people would you think are people you describe?

I honestly don't know, and a majority are probably people who like it, but it doesn't defeat my point about how sales shouldn't be used as something that defines quality of product.
