Silva got tossed around like a rag doll for 4 rounds before pulling out a miracle. Not quite the same. 😎

That.
The truth of the matter is, neither of those fights shed light on new information about the guys. Any fan should have already known that GSP is capable of outwrestling Silva. By the same taken, it doesn't take Jake messing up GSP's eye to know that Silva could take GSP's head off with one punch.
Suddenly going "yeah, this guy definitely wins now" seems retarded from either side to me.

Aside from the eye gouge, the threat of the takedown was what kept Shields in the fight from a striking standpoint, as you could tell GSP was tentative and didn't commit as much as he may have wanted to. It's the same reason Chael did so well against Anderson on the feet, imo.
I can also point to the first Wanderlei/Cro Cop fight as another example of this.

That is true. Crocop showed in the rematch what it's like when he doesn't fear takedown attempts.
Not really. He's never really beaten anyone in the top 10. Wah wah dan henderson wah wah. The myth that he has great takedown defense needs to be busted. He's been taken down by most of the grapplers he's fought. Both Nog bros took him down with little problem. He's a one trick pony who, he that trick doesn't work, usually loses.....especially when he's taken down. Not to mention he was all types of f'd up before the fight ever started. And my man Kampman kicked his ass. I like Kamp as a gate keeper. If you can beat that monster, you deserve a title shot. As for shields, he should have stayed at mw. He could beat Silva. I think Dana is protecting Silva or he's got a contract like tito in which he can pick the fights. He's had 2 decent challengers since becoming champ. The Chael fight looked like a punishment for acting like a douch in the octagon.. I'm just not impressed with the guy.

Maybe, maybe not, but at least he KO's his cans. GSP can only jab them or LnP them to boredom.
I would like Silva to face better fighters though. Most of the fights during his UFC reign were against guys no one will remember

Yes, really. Being on a 15 fight win-streak that includes guys like Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit, Dan Henderson, Mayhem, Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley, and Martin Kampmann beats anything the last few opponents GSP has defended the title against have done.
Koscheck? After getting KO'd by Paulo Thiago, he beat Frank Trigg, Anthony Johnson, and Paul Daley.
Hardy? He beat Gono, Rory Markham, Marcus Davis (a fight I actually thought he lost), and Mike Swick.
Alves? With wins over Hughes, Parisyan, Lytle, and Koscheck, he had an impressive run, but not more so than Shields.
Penn? He beat Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson, and Sean Sherk.
Give me a f*cking break.
